Wildcats Add to Streak with Win at Friona, 73-14
The Canadian Wildcats lead all Texas Panhandle teams with a very impressive win streak. Going back to the 2012 season, the Wildcats have racked up 41 consecutive District wins. And to be fair, this accomplishment hasn’t come without close calls. Very close calls. Take for instance the 2018 District matchup with another state-ranked, perianal rival, Childress at Canadian. Down 24-30 to Childress with 4:21 left in the game, Canadian drove 85 yards to go ahead with 16 seconds left and win 31-30.
No win streak is easy. They are all made to be snapped against any given opponent. Friona hosted Canadian on this Friday night knowing the Wildcats had scored 159 points in only two games prior to this meeting. They didn’t want to be the next victim of a 70+ point romp. But with the offensive onslaught that Canadian dishes up with the fast-tempo strategy affectionately known as the “NASCAR” offense, the Chieftains couldn’t prevent the enviable.
Friona’s defense gave up four TDs in the first period and four more in the second period before finding the end zone for themselves. Going in at the half looking at a 63-6 deficit was much of what the Chieftains had been watching other opponents suffer against Canadian on film all week and that wasn’t a bit comforting.
Offensively, Canadian’s 1st quarter consisted of two more TD’s from an on-fire WR Gary Anderson (who possibly turned in a program history record first half last week versus Dimmitt) with an 11 yard run and a 52 yard pass from gunslinger QB Josh Culwell. Culwell also connected with up-and-coming Freshman RB Luke Flowers for a 55 yd TD reception. Culwell kept the foot on the accelerator to open the 2nd period by finding the big, 6-2, 210 WR Reagan Cochran for two TD passes from 16 and 40 yards respectively.
Running backs Hayze Hufstedler (12 yd run) and Landon Smith (6 yd run) both found the end zone in Q2 before Friona’s Bryan Chavira finally found paydirt for the Chieftains with a 44 yd TD and the PAT was blocked by Canadian. With 4:24 left in the 1st half, the Wildcats just did what they practice to do, score one last time in the half with 1:17 left with a 17 yd keeper by QB Josh Culwell.
One of the highlights of the night for anyone that appreciates talented high school kickers came whenever Canadian’s Edgar Salazar hit a 40 yard FG with 7:32 left in Q3. It made Canadian fans keep hoping that one day Salazar might get to show-off his leg with another 50+ yard FG attempt, which he is more than capable of producing. Salazar also had a perfect night hitting 10 PATs, redeeming himself from several recent PAT misses. Wildcat RB Aiden Dickinson would add Canadian’s last score with a 13 yard run with 1:14 left in the 3rd period. Friona’s Mario Bautista scampered for a 21 yard run with 7:04 left in the game.
Next week Canadian will host Tulia hoping to maintain their historic conference game winning streak.
