Cedar Park Routs Rival Georgetown in District Opener
In Sanskrit, “mudita” is a term for sympathetic joy, especially taking joy in the success of others. Cedar Park head coach Carl Abseck said Friday that his players abide by this philosophy in regards to each other’s successes. On Friday night, they had plenty of opportunities to put that into practice.
In their District-11-5A-DI opener and Homecoming game, the Timberwolves faced their district rivals, the Georgetown Eagles. Historically, the rivalry was a fierce and competitive one with the outcome usually having a significant impact on the district title race. This year’s contest appeared to be another competitive installment in the series. Both teams entered at 2-0 with wins over traditional 6A powerhouses. Georgetown opened their season with wins over Belton and Copperas Cove while Cedar Park had beaten familiar foe Leander Vandegrift as well as Round Rock Cedar Ridge.
Entering Friday’s contest, the Timberwolves held a 12-2 edge in the all-time series. On Friday night, the Timberwolves added another victory to their tally in the series with a decisive 56-24 rout. In the first half, Cedar Park put on a dominant performance which gave them a 49-3 lead. Quarterback Ryder Hernandez picked apart the Georgetown secondary and threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns. Three of those touchdown passes were 50-yard bombs. Two of those passes were to Jack Hestera and one was to Josh Cameron. Running back Cade Haught ran for two touchdowns, and running back Kevin Adams also added a touchdown on the ground.
Defensively, the Timberwolves’ defense held the Eagles to three points and 81 yards in the first half. The lone first-half score for Georgetown came early in the second quarter when kicker Carson Sauseda netted a 34-yard field goal. As part of the Homecoming festivities, Cedar Park linebacker Javion Mays was crowned Homecoming King.
In the second half, Georgetown was finally able to find the end zone. On the Eagles’ first drive of the half, quarterback Darson Herman connected with Brandon Bradford for a 12-yard touchdown pass. After the Eagles recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Herman found Cole Petter for a 27-yard touchdown pass. Cedar Park responded, however, when Cade Haught found the end zone for a third time on a 46-yard touchdown run. Late in the fourth quarter, wide receiver Tyler Fithian caught a 28-yard touchdown pass for Georgetown which brought the game to its final score.
After the game, Coach Abseck praised his team’s overall performance. He had high praise for the offensive line for giving excellent protection for Hernandez throughout the night and also praised his receivers for giving Hernandez a variety of options in the passing game. He also praised his running backs for taking a big step forward in an area he was seeking to improve.
With the win, Cedar Park improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in district. Next week, the Timberwolves travel to the Pfield in Pflugerville to take on the Pflugerville Hendrickson Hawks (3-0 overall, 1-0 district) in a Thursday game. Georgetown, meanwhile, falls to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in district. Head Coach Chuck Griffin praised his team’s resolve and resilience despite the large deficit. Next week, the Eagles return home to face the Manor Mustangs (1-1 overall, 1-0 district.)
