Solid Battle Between Hawks and Eagles in First-Ever Meeting
Only halfway through the season, the Georgetown Eagles have proven to be an incredibly resilient squad. Last week coming off a crushing 56-24 loss to Cedar Park, the Eagles found themselves down 26-0 at halftime against the Manor Mustangs. Rather than get discouraged, however, the Eagles scored 36 unanswered points in the second half to secure their first district win.
This week, the Eagles’ resilience was again put to the test in the Eagles’ first-ever meeting with District 11-5A DI newcomers the Pflugerville Hendrickson Hawks. The Hawks were seeking to bounce back from a 66-28 drubbing at the hands of Cedar Park in their district opener. Despite getting off to a slow start, the Eagles used a heavy dose of the ground game and several key defensive stands to secure a 37-33 win over the Hawks.
On the opening drive, running back Nate Denney broke free for a 58-yard run to the Hendrickson 12-yard line. However, the offense stalled; and kicker Carson Sauseda netted 31-yard field goal. The Eagles’ defense then forced the Hawks to punt, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty kept the Hendrickson drive alive. Receiver Xavier Lucio capped off the drive with a 26-yard statue of liberty pass to receiver Jaden Williams.
Following the Hendrickson touchdown, Nate Denney put the Eagles back in front 10-7 with a seven-yard touchdown run. The Eagles’ lead was short-lived, however, as running back Jasiya Demps put the Hawks back in front 14-10 with a two-yard touchdown run. Neither team was able to score again until late in the second quarter when Denney found the end zone again on a one-yard touchdown run. The Hawks appeared poised to take back the lead on their next drive, but Eagle defensive back Aaron Bizzell ended the Hawks’ drive with an interception near the goal line.
In the second half, the back-and-forth battle continued. Jaden Williams found the endzone again on a 54-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Oldoerp, but the Hawks missed the extra point. On the ensuing drive, Georgetown recaptured the lead on a 76-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Darson Herman to tight end Cole Petter. Jaden Williams then found the end zone a third time on a one-yard touchdown catch, but Georgetown responded with Herman’s 20-yard touchdown keeper to give Georgetown a 31-27 lead.
Early in the fourth quarter, Xavier Lucio found the end zone again on a six- yard touchdown catch; but the Hawks once again missed the extra point. On the following drive, running back Ryan Eady gave the Eagles the lead for good with a 28-yard touchdown run. The Eagles failed to the two-point conversion leaving the score at 37-33. After forcing Hendrickson to punt on the next drive, the Eagles got the ball with 5:53 left in the game. Through a combination of the ground game and clock management, the Eagles were able to run out the clock and seal the game.
After the game, Georgetown head coach Chuck Griffin credited his team for finishing the game strong. He had high praise for his offensive line and running backs for their performance and credited his receivers with making several critical plays. Additionally, he praised his defense for making several critical stops. With the win, Georgetown improves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in district.
The Eagles have a bye next week and will travel to House Park the following week to face the Austin Anderson Trojans (1-3 overall, 0-2 district.) Hendrickson, meanwhile, falls to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in district. The Hawks will return home to the Pfield in Pflugerville next week for a Thursday-night matchup against the Pflugerville Weiss Wolves (1-2 overall, 1-0 district.)
