Canadian Defeats Hard Hitting Bangs Team 56-13 for Area Title
The Bangs Dragons came into this Area Championship game with a 9-1 record having been narrowly defeated for the District 2-3ADII title by Ballinger. The Bi-District round forfeit by Tornillo basically gave them an injury free extra week to prepare for #1 Canadian. It wasn’t any surprise that a team as good and as physical as the Dragons were, they came out ready to play some ball. It was certainly apparent they weren’t intimidated by the Wildcats, who experienced some of the biggest hits from Bangs as any opponent all season. But as physical as Bangs proved to be, the consistent Wildcat NASCAR offense lightning in a bottle was poured out once again and the Dragons couldn’t prevent a Canadian halftime lead of 49-6.
The opening kickoff was taken by Canadian’s Twister Kelton into Dragon territory to the 45 yd line. Five plays later QB Josh Culwell threw to the back corner of the end zone to WR Reagan Cochran for the first score using only 1:18 of the Q1 clock. The Wildcat defense held the Dragons to a 7-play drive that ended on the Canadian 42 yd line that featured a 39 yd pass play from QB Ethan Cortez to WR Brayton Wedeman that was caught after being tipped by fellow Dragon WR Guy Powell.
Wedeman punted to Canadian and got a perfect roll to for his gunners to down the ball inside the 1 yd line. The Wildcats proceeded to dig themselves out of the hole and 4 plays later, from their 23 yd line, Culwell hit Twister Kelton down the sideline for a 77 yd TD, another splash from the aforementioned lightning in a bottle. Another Wildcat three-and-out on the Dragons offense and Culwell and company commenced to march 58 yds on an 11-play drive that ended with a 9 yd TD run by RB Jake Krehbiel with 2:37 left in the first quarter.
Did the Wildcats have time to score again in Q1? With another defensive 3-and-out and a 68 yd 4-play drive that ended with yet another Culwell-to-Kelton 40 yd TD strike, the answer was ‘yes’. The Dragons opened up the second quarter unshaken by the 28-0 deficit they faced and with a 20 yd run by RB Ethan Sanchez that put Bangs on the 50 yd line, Cortez and Sanchez executed a little flea-flicker play so Cortez could throw to a wide-open Powell who sneaked past the Wildcat secondary. Braxton Melling’s PAT went wide right. But the Canadian offensive tempo had the Dragons defense reeling for the rest of the second quarter with Krehbiel catching a 25 yd TD pass almost intercepted by Wedeman form his DB position, RB Hayze Hufstedler would weave his way into the end zone from 5 yds out, and Reagan Cochran would get his second TD of the night catching a Culwell pass on a post route up the middle of the field from 39 yds out.
Early in the third quarter, Bangs QB Cortez found WR Brayton Wedeman across the middle for a 35 yd TD. Melling’s kick was good moving the scoreboard to 49-13 for the Dragons. Canadian’s Culwell found himself one more TD pass to throw for the night and Jake Krehbiel would have his second TD reception for the night from 20 yds out. That would end the scoring for the night as a running mercy clock had been agreed to and the scoreboard froze at 56-13.
Next week the #1 Wildcats will move on to the Regional Semi-final to play #6 Idalou at the former Kimbrough Stadium, Happy State Bank Field in Canyon, Texas. In the other semi-final, two other teams from Canadian’s District 3-3ADII, #5 Spearman and #9 Childress will meet again for a shot at Canadian or Idalou in the Regional Final (State Quarter-final). The Canadian/Spearman match wanted by so many 3A fans in the state gets one round closer.
