Michael De Leon, a Life Well-Lived

An Important Player in Texas Sports and Even Better Man

My friend, Michael De Leon was a gentle giant of a man that played a key role in Texas sports. He was one of those guys that was always there. You could always count on Michael to be a cheerleader for people. It didn't matter who you were, Michael was in your corner.

As he publicly set about making (and recording) history in Texas high school and college football as well as Spurs basketball, his private side was even more impactful. From the countless people he encouraged across his sports journalism network to his passions for his family and friends, Michael was one of the kindest and most generous men I have ever met.

I have known and worked with him for over 13 years and in that time never heard a cross word or even as much as a negative comment. To say he was a giant of man was not a reference to his height - but to his heart. I am honored to have been able to work and laugh with him.

The impact that Michael had and the outpouring of condolences and remembrances, from across the state and the world, would be shocking to see if you didn't know the man. He earned and deserves every accolade attributed to him. Those are just a tiny reflection of the effect he had on the hearts of those that knew him. Michael has left a legacy of great work... a legacy of lives touched... but most of all, a legacy of being the best example of what a man could be.

Michael, your state misses you, your sports miss you, your friends and family miss you. I miss you. God speed on your travels and thank you for everything. No one has done it better.
