Spring Westfield Advances Past Waxahachie
On Saturday afternoon in Hutto, the Spring Westfield Mustangs edged past the Waxahachie Indians 10-7 in the regional semi-finals of the UIL 6A-D1 Playoffs. The Mustangs entered the game at 11-1 overall following a dramatic 41-38 win over Klein Collins in the area round. Waxahachie, meanwhile, entered the game at 10-2 overall following a 31-25 victory over Rockwall. Prior to the game, the Mustangs were averaging 55 points per game; and the Indians were averaging 36. However, both offenses struggled to execute in Saturday’s game.
In the first half, neither team was able to score; and miscues were plentiful on both sides. Westfield gave up two fumbles and threw an interception while Waxahachie gave up one fumble and a turnover on downs. In the second half, Waxahachie quarterback Ramon McKinney connected with receiver De’Tyrion McCoy for a 40-yard touchdown pass to put his team up 7-0. Westfield responded on the ensuing drive with a 35-yard field goal. With just over three minutes left in the game, Westfield quarterback Preston Hatter atoned for a fumble and an interception in the first half with a 67-yard touchdown pass to receiver Da’John Palomo to put his team in front 10-7. Waxahachie got the ball back at their own 25-yard line with just under three minutes left in the game. Unfortunately for the Indians, they failed to convert on fourth down inside Westfield territory; and Westfield was able to run out the clock.
After the game, Westfield Head Coach Matt Meekins praised his team’s effort and resilience to overcome early mistakes. He was especially laudatory of his defense for their performance and said that his team was especially grateful to advance after losing in the same round last season. He also praised Preston Hatter’s ability to overcome his early mistakes and lead his team to the game-winning score. Hatter also said that it felt good to be able to throw the game winning touchdown and that he appreciated his team maintaining their trust in him. With the win, Westfield improves to 12-1 overall. The Mustangs will face Duncanville in the next round at a date and location to be determined.
