John Kay leaves North Shore for Rice

John Kay - Galena Park North Shore

Galena Park North Shore High School is looking for a new head coach after John Kay announced his departure to begin his college coaching career at Rice University. Kay served as head coach for nine years, winning four 6A state championships (2015, 2018, 2019, and 2021.) He leaves with a record of 117-18, including eight district titles, five appearances in the state championship game, and four state titles, all in the Class 6A Division I bracket, the largest in Texas and one of the most challenging in all of high school football.

At Rice, Kay will be coaching linebackers and working under Head Coach Mike Bloomgren, with whom he has already established a relationship. Kay expressed his enthusiasm for this new opportunity, stating that he is excited to begin his college coaching career and that his departure from North Shore High School was not due to any issues within the program. He added that the program is in good hands and that he is confident in the team's continued success.

Bloomgren, entering his sixth season as head coach of Rice, is looking to strengthen his team and establish relationships with high school coaches in the Greater Houston area and across the state. Rice qualified for its first bowl trip under Bloomgren in 2022 (a 38-24 loss to Southern Miss) and will join the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in 2023.
