Tigers dominate Hawks to keep pace in district
On Friday night at the Pfield in Pflugerville, the College Station A&M Consolidated Tigers kept their District 11-5A D1 title hopes alive with a 42-3 rout of the Pflugerville Hendrickson Hawks. Both teams entered the game at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in district and both teams featured new head coaches. Last week, the Tigers staved off a late rally from Cedar Park for a 24-16 win. The Hawks, meanwhile, were looking to right the ship following a 44-14 loss against Georgetown last week. Prior to the game, Consol Head Coach Brandon Schmidt said that defense was the team’s greatest strength so far this season; and the Tigers’ defense certainly proved that Friday. Throughout the game, the defense wreaked havoc against the Hawks forcing multiple turnovers and tackles for loss. The offense, meanwhile, was able to move the ball almost at will.
In the first half, the Tigers got their first turnover on Hendrickson’s opening drive. The Hawks fumbled the snap on a punt, and the Tigers recovered the ball at the Hendrickson 39-yard line. The Tigers then turned the turnover into points when quarterback Tyler Poling connected with receiver Darius Roberts for a 45-yard touchdown pass. On the Tigers’ next drive, receiver Ellis Myers extended the Consol lead with a 25-yard touchdown catch. Following the touchdown, the Consol defense got its second turnover of the night when Connor Keishnick intercepted a pass on a fake punt. The Tigers capitalized on this turnover as well with a 15-yard touchdown pass to receiver Keshun Thomas. Shortly before halftime, the Tigers extended their lead to 28-0 courtesy of Trace Meadows’s three-yard touchdown run. The touchdown was set up by the defense recovering another fumble at the Hendrickson 39-yard line. In the third quarter, Payton Bjork caught a six-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive to give Consol a 35-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, the Hawks managed to drive the ball inside the Tigers’ ten-yard line; but a negative play pinned them all the way back to the Tigers’ 19-yard line. The Hawks were unable to recover from the setback, and kicker Blake Tobias netted a 36-yard field goal for the Hawks’ only points of the night. In the fourth quarter, Meadows found the end zone again on two-yard touchdown run.
After the game, Coach Schmidt praised his team’s performance, especially their focus. “When you make it about us, that’s what happens,” he said to his players. Schmidt said that the statement referred to the way his team was able to focus on its performance and goals and ignore outside pressure. Schmidt also said that he thought his team played its best overall game of the season. With the win, A&M Consolidated improves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in district. Next week, the Tigers host the Leander Lions (1-5, 0-3.)
Hendrickson, meanwhile, falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in district. After the game, Hendrickson Head Coach Doug Pearce credited his team for not giving up. He also praised his defense for making several big plays throughout the night. Next week, the Hawks will host Cedar Park (3-3, 1-2.)
