Patriots overcome 16-point deficit for Homecoming victory
The Georgetown East View Patriots and the Leander Glenn Grizzlies opened district play with a thriller Friday night at Birkelbach Field. The Grizzlies had the upper hand after a back-and-forth first half and appeared to be taking control early in the third quarter. The Patriots, however, were not about to let the Grizzlies spoil their homecoming. After being down 42-26 in the third quarter, the Patriots scored 20 unanswered points to rally for a 46-42 victory. “I saw no doubt in their eyes,” East View Head Coach Michael Wall said.
Early in the game, both teams traded blows. Running back De’marcus Davis opened the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown run for Glenn. However, the Patriots immediately responded with a 78-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ty Blair to receiver Kieston Rainey. Not to be outdone, quarterback Dakota Dubelbeis responded with a 71-yard touchdown keeper. The Grizzlies converted the two-point attempt and took a 15-7 lead, but receiver Luke Martin caught a touchdown pass on the ensuing drive to pull East View within one point.
Early in the second quarter, De’marcus Davis found the end zone again on a seven-yard touchdown run which extended the Grizzlies’ lead to 22-14. Shortly before halftime, Glenn kicker Armando Don Juan further extended the Grizzlies’ lead with a 31-yard field goal. There were only 47 seconds remaining in the half after the field goal, but the action was far from over. East View receiver Caleb Hill caught a 27-yard touchdown pass with 17 seconds left, but the Patriots failed the two-point conversion. Armando Don Juan then netted his second field goal of the night from 47 yards.
In the second half, the big scoring plays continued. On the opening drive of the third quarter, East View running back Blake Honeycutt broke free for a 74-yard touchdown run; but the Patriots again failed the two-point conversion. Dubelbeis responded with his second touchdown keeper of the night which put Glenn up 35-26. The Patriots drove the ball deep into Glenn territory on the ensuing drive, but linebacker James Gray recovered Blake Honeycutt’s fumble at the Glenn 23-yard line. Running back Jason Ortiz then scored on a three-yard touchdown run.
On the ensuing drive, the Patriots started to take the momentum. Blair connected with receiver Tanner Namken for a 60-yard touchdown pass which cut Glenn’s lead to 42-32. Early in the fourth quarter, Honeycutt’s second touchdown on a four-yard run brought East View within three points.
With less than four minutes remaining, the East View comeback was in peril. The Grizzlies’ defense had found its footing and was getting pressure on the Patriots. To make matters worse, Ty Blair was called for intentional grounding; and the Patriots moved back to their own 11-yard line. On third and 20, however, East View found some homecoming magic. In the shadow of his own goal line, Ty Blair found Tanner Namken deep and threw a bomb. To add to the drama, Namken bobbled the pass momentarily and stumbled. However, he was able to find his balance and complete the 89-yard touchdown catch which gave East View its first lead of the night. The defense then recovered Dubelbeis’s fumble to secure the victory.
After the game, Coach Wall credited his team and defensive staff for making adjustments against an unfamiliar offense. “They ran some things that they had never shown before,” Wall said. With the win, East View improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in district. Next week, the Patriots will travel to face the Lake Belton Broncos (2-2, 0-1.)
Glenn, meanwhile, falls to 2-2 overall and -0-1 in district. Next week, the Grizzlies will return home to Bible Stadium to face the Leander Lions (2-2, 1-0.)
