Dripping Springs Overpowers Round Rock McNeil to Advance to Area Round
For the third-consecutive year, the Dripping Springs Tigers have advanced to the UIL 6A-D2 Area Round. The Tigers advanced on Friday with an emphatic 49-14 win over the Round Rock McNeil Mavericks in the Bi-District Round. Quarterback Maddox Maher and running back Jack Tyndall led the Tigers’ stellar offensive performance. Maher threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns, and Tyndall rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns. McNeil made some big plays and kept the game within reach into the third quarter. However, the mistakes and penalties ultimately doomed the Mavericks.
In the first half, the game was quite competitive. After the Mavericks punted on the opening drive, McNeil linebacker Marshall Holland returned an interception to the Dripping Springs 35-yard line. The Mavericks were unable to take advantage, however, because of a fumble on a double pass. Dripping Springs then capitalized on the mistake with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Maddox Maher to receiver Merrik Bloomgren.
McNeil responded on the ensuing drive with a pass to receiver Zyaryen Hall early in the second quarter. Maher then put the Tigers back in front on the next drive with a 24-yard touchdown pass to receiver Nick Tyndall. Following the Dripping Springs touchdown, McNeil put together a drive that reached the Tigers’ six-yard line; but quarterback Jadon Sultz’s pass fell incomplete on fourth down. Dripping Springs receiver Cooper Reid then caught a 34-yard touchdown pass to put the Tigers ahead 21-7 going into halftime.
In the second half, Jack Tyndall stole the show. On the opening drive, Tyndall broke free on fourth down in McNeil territory for an 18-yard touchdown run. Not content to give up, McNeil responded with a 15-yard touchdown pass to receiver Aden Taylor. Taylor appeared to score on a 73-yard touchdown pass earlier in the drive, but the touchdown was called back for an ineligible receiver downfield. From that point on, the Tigers took complete control. Jack Tyndall continued to be the workhorse for the Tigers and scored two more touchdowns. Late in the fourth quarter, Dripping Springs backup quarterback Mateo Perez scored on a three-yard keeper.
After the game, Dripping Springs Head Coach Galen Zimmerman praised his team’s focus and efficiency. He also praised his offensive line for their performance and improvement throughout the year. “Our run game, ability to control the clock, ability to control the line of scrimmage, and efficiency were a big deal for us,” Zimmerman said. Dripping Springs improves 8-3 overall and will face the San Antonio Harlan Hawks (10-1) in the Area Round. The game will be Friday at 7:30pm at New Braunfels Canyon.
McNeil, meanwhile, finishes the year at 5-6.
