Arlington, TX — The Carthage Bulldogs etched their names further into Texas high school football history with a resounding 28-14 victory over the Waco La Vega Pirates in the Class 4A Division I State Championship game at AT&T Stadium on Friday. The win marked the Bulldogs’ 10th state title under head coach Scott Surratt, solidifying Carthage’s reputation as a powerhouse program.
First Half Action
Carthage took control early in the second quarter, with running back Kelwin Edwards breaking through for a 21-yard touchdown run. Kicker Leo Medrano’s extra point gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. La Vega responded later in the quarter with Kourtney Parr’s 1-yard touchdown run, capping a six-play, 60-yard drive to tie the game at 7-7. However, Edwards electrified the crowd with an 86-yard touchdown sprint on the ensuing possession, reclaiming a 14-7 lead for Carthage.
Defensive Dominance and Offensive Precision
After a scoreless third quarter, Carthage extended their lead in the fourth with quarterback Jett Surratt connecting with Junior Henderson for a pair of touchdown passes — a 24-yard strike and a 19-yard reception, putting the Bulldogs up 28-7.
