Gunter Tigers Dominate Woodville in State Championship Game

Arlington, TX - The Gunter Tigers claimed the Class 3A Division II State Championship with a decisive 28-0 victory over the Woodville Eagles at AT&T Stadium on December 19, 2024. Gunter's dominant defense and explosive offense left Woodville unable to gain momentum throughout the game.

The scoring began in the second quarter with Gunter quarterback Preston Tarpley connecting on an 18-yard touchdown pass to Cole Harpole. The third quarter saw the Tigers extend their lead significantly. Mitchell Gage returned the second-half kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, followed by Tarpley's 59-yard touchdown pass to Cash Rumage. In the fourth quarter, Brock Boddie intercepted a Woodville pass and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown.

Gunter's offense amassed 205 total yards, including 84 rushing and 121 passing yards. Preston Tarpley completed 9 of 15 passes for 121 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Brock Boddie led the rushing attack with 51 yards on 15 carries, while Cash Rumage caught two passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. Mitchell Gage contributed with his 96-yard kickoff return touchdown.

Woodville's offense was limited to 147 total yards, with 54 rushing and 93 passing yards. Luke Babin completed 9 of 23 passes for 93 yards with two interceptions. Tayvion Hunter led the rushing effort with 42 yards on 17 carries, and Kevunte McDaniel was the top receiver with 28 yards on two catches.

Gunter's defense was stellar, allowing just nine first downs and forcing two turnovers. They tallied six sacks for 30 yards and 11 tackles for loss totaling 40 yards. Hayden Farrell led the way with three sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. Woodville's defense recorded two sacks for 16 yards and four tackles for loss totaling 20 yards.

Special teams played a crucial role for Gunter, with Gage’s 96-yard kickoff return touchdown and an average of 59.6 yards per kickoff. Woodville averaged just 12 net yards per kickoff.

Gunter ended their season with a 14-2 record, securing the state championship, while Woodville concluded their impressive season with a 13-3 record.
