ARLINGTON - As usual, when the Texas high school football state championship games roll around, it is a big deal. 50,000 fellow Lone Star gridiron fans agree, that it is the BEST value in sports entertainment.
But which games provided the best bangs for the buck? This is a list that is not focusing on the storyline (there are SOOOO many great storylines.) I will put a ❤️ by the best storyline.
This is instead a rating of the most entertainment for the fan in the seat.
These are opinions - if you disagree, feel free to comment but remember these are kids so show your disagreement with respect and class. Now, on to the the greatest games from the greatest four-day state championship of the greatest sports in the greatest state!!
- Ganado 30, Stamford 28 (3OT) - can't argue with triple overtime
- Muenster 36, Shiner 29 - a scrappy Shiner team kept coming back and finally Muenster put them away scoring the game-winning TD with 40 seconds left
- Randle 38, South Oak Cliff 35 - this game seemed like a couple of Power 5 college teams going at each other. A missed FG as time ran out avoided OT
- Austin Vandegrift 24, Southlake Carroll 17 - another quality game that feature a lot of yards through the air. The big surprise was how easy the Viper made running the ball against Southlake appear
- Smithson Valley 32, Dallas Highland Park 20 ❤️ - two storied programs, one that has reached the pinnacle many times and one that has come close - what's not to love about this matchup? And best of all, Coach Larry Hill gets his state title!
- Carthage 28, Waco La Vega 14 - this looked like it could go either way at times because both played such great defense. In the end, the Bulldogs put away the Pirates
- Columbus 48, Malakoff 14 - the storylines are what made this game so good. Whether you talk about Grayson Rigdon winning four straight state championship (with three schools) or the Schobels sweeping the MVP awards, it was a fun time
- Celina 55, Kilgore 21 - this one looked to be a track meet earlier, then Celina just kept pouring it on while Kilgore destructed
- North Crowley 50, Austin Westlake 21 - the only reason this one ranked as high as it did was the sheer athletic ability on display. It was very one-sided although it showed glimpses of being a game at times
- Gunter 28, Woodville 0 - this one seemed closer than it was at times but really, was never in doubt
- Gordon 70, Whiteface 24 - the streak of sixman title game ending in a Mercy Rule continues
- Jayton 54, Oakwood 8 - ditto
