Georgetown Continues Dominance Over Georgetown East View
Georgetown star running back Jett Walker dominated the Battle of the San Gabriel Friday night, rushing for 199 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Eagles to a commanding 31-8 victory over their rivals, the Georgetown East View Patriots.
With both teams 5-1 overall and 3-0 in district, the tenth edition of crosstown clash was billed to be an epic showdown. Both teams featured dynamic high-scoring offenses. The Eagles were averaging 40 points per game, and the Patriots were averaging 35. Georgetown Head Coach Chuck Griffin credited his defense for containing East View’s dual-threat quarterback Cormyc Guerrero. “They did a good job containing the quarterback…and stopping the zone.”
In the first half, the Eagles took firm control. Walker scored his first touchdown of the night late in the second quarter on a seven-yard run. Receiver Xavier Warren doubled the Eagles’ lead early in the second quarter with a 16-yard catch from quarterback Kaleb McDougle.
Throughout the half, the Eagles’ defense wreaked havoc on the Patriots’ offensive line with constant pressure and multiple sacks on Guerrero. One of those sacks forced a fumble which led to a field goal by kicker Samuel Galaviz. Shortly before halftime, Walker scored his second touchdown of the night to put Georgetown ahead 24-0.
On the opening drive of the second half, Walker continued a stellar night with his third touchdown. Walker also eclipsed 5000 career rushing yards in Friday’s game. Following Walker’s touchdown, East View began to find some momentum. Guerrero led the Patriots down the field and connected with receiver Makail De Leon for an 11-yard touchdown and scrambled into the end zone for the two-point conversion.
Early in the fourth quarter, East View had a golden chance to keep their rally alive. The Patriots drove the ball down to the Georgetown 11-yard line and were on the verge of scoring another touchdown. However, Georgetown’s defense stepped up. The Eagles only allowed the Patriots to reach the six-yard line before forcing the Patriots backwards. On fourth and seven, the Eagles’ pressure forced Guerrero to make an errant throw sealing the game.
Next week, Georgetown (6-1, 4-0) will host the Leander Glenn Grizzlies (0-7, 0-4) before key district matchups against Lake Belton and Cedar Park.
East View (5-2, 3-1), meanwhile, will travel to face Killeen Chaparral (2-5. 0-4.)
