Georgetown Clinches Playoff Berth Against Killeen

Postseason hopes hung in the balance Friday night as the Georgetown Eagles hosted the Killeen Kangaroos. The Eagles controlled their own destiny: a win would secure a playoff berth. The Kangaroos faced a steeper challenge. Not only did they need a victory, but they also had to win by at least 10 points to claim a tiebreaker advantage over Pflugerville Hendrickson and rival Killeen Shoemaker.

Behind a relentless ground attack and a stout defensive effort, Georgetown punched its ticket to the playoffs with a 28-14 victory over Killeen in a physical slugfest.

Running back Zechariah Guyton led the way offensively for the Eagles. Although he finished with just 79 rushing yards, Guyton accounted for all three Georgetown touchdowns and added a two-point conversion. Defensively, the Eagles wreaked havoc on Killeen's offense, applying consistent pressure and limiting the Roos' ground game. Defensive back Quinton Rock also made his presence felt, recording two interceptions.

Defense ruled the opening half. On Georgetown's second drive, Guyton scored the game's first points on a one-yard touchdown run. Killeen drove into Georgetown territory three times before halftime, but two drives ended on downs and the third ended with Rock's first interception in the Eagles' end zone.

Georgetown's offense struggled to build on its early lead. After Guyton's touchdown, the Eagles' next possession ended with a blocked field goal. The defense then forced another turnover on downs, but Georgetown again came away empty after a drive stalled at the Killeen 8-yard line. On the final play of the half, Killeen linebacker Tyson Caldwell answered Rock's takeaway with an interception of his own.

At halftime, Georgetown honored class of 2002 alumnus and former NFL kicker Mason Crosby by retiring his jersey number. Crosby played in the NFL for 17 seasons including 16 for the Green Bay Packers. Crosby won a Super Bowl with the Packers in 2010.

While defense dominated the first half, the second half opened with more of the same. Rock's second interception gave Georgetown excellent field position on Killeen's opening possession, but the Roos answered by forcing a turnover of their own. After that exchange, both offenses began to find success moving the ball.

Following the fumble, Killeen quarterback D'Angelo Ingram put the Roos on the board with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Mays. Georgetown kicker Dan Lopez answered the touchdown with a 26-yard field goal. On the ensuing drive, a bad snap to the Killeen punter forced him to take a knee in the end zone for a safety. Early in the fourth quarter, Guyton scored his second touchdown. Georgetown also made the two-point conversion to go up 21-7. Killeen running back Jataveion Harris answered with a 30-yard touchdown catch, but that was as close as the Roos got. Guyton sealed the game on the next drive with a four-yard touchdown run.

With the win, Georgetown finishes the regular season at 6-4 overall and 5-3 in district. The Eagles will travel to Angleton (9-1, 7-1) to face the Wildcats in the 5A-D1 bi-district round on Friday, November 7, at 7:00pm.

Killeen, meanwhile, finishes at 5-5 overall and 4-4 in district.
