LSG Internship Onboarding
Now the real work begins.
You have already cleared the first hurdle: you were given a simple assignment, followed through, and reported back. This page explains how to turn that first win into real sports-media experience and a portfolio you can use.
Assignment Zero: Complete
This is not the finish line. It means you have earned access to the next step in the Lone Star Gridiron internship workflow.
What you are joining
This internship is built around real work for real media outlets. Lone Star Gridiron covers Texas high school football. Lone Star Podcast Network produces podcast and video content. Gulf Coast Sports Report gives us another outlet for regional sports coverage. Your assignments may touch one or several of these properties as you develop your skills.
How you move from intern to working in sports media
You will not spend this internship watching other people work. You will learn by doing. You start with structured assignments, show that you can deliver, and earn more responsibility.
Prove you can execute
Complete clear assignments, follow directions, hit deadlines, communicate and make corrections when needed.
Produce useful work
Research, write, edit, clip, interview, cover events, build social content, prepare episodes or handle other real production work.
Earn ownership
Strong interns can eventually own a team, district, geographic area, show, content series or recurring production responsibility.
Where you may contribute
Every assignment follows the same basic workflow
Publishing is part of the job
Creating the content is only part of media work. Approved stories, videos and other content need to be properly prepared and published. Depending on your experience and level of trust, you may prepare the complete publishing package, publish approved work yourself, or hand it to one of our VAs for final posting.

How to succeed here
Do this
- Read the entire assignment before starting.
- Meet the deadline you accepted.
- Ask when something truly needs clarification.
- When the instructions are clear, get to work.
- Communicate early if something blocks you.
- Take feedback, fix the work and learn from it.
- Tell us when an assignment is complete.
Do not expect this
- Someone chasing you down to get started.
- Repeated reminders about your deadline.
- Step-by-step hand-holding on every task.
- Better assignments before proving reliability.
- Publishing access before earning trust.
- Credit for work you did not finish.
The goal is not an internship line on your résumé
You have access to experience. Use it.
Chris Doelle brings more than 35 years of experience across media, marketing, publishing, photography, broadcasting, podcasting and related work. Ask questions. Ask why. Ask for feedback. Learn as much as you can.
But nobody will stand behind you kicking you to get the work done. Success here goes to interns who can self-motivate, recognize when they need help, and recognize when they already have enough information to simply get to work.
