Craig Slaughter has been was named the Head Coach and Athletic Director at Sweetwater. Slaughter was the head coach at Clyde last year which had a 11-2 record. Those two losses were to Sweetwater and the eventual 2A Champion Muleshoe.
Slaughter was a Head Coach at Hearne four years before going to Clyde for the last three years. Before that he was an assistant at Ballinger, Menard and Eastland. He has an overall record of 47-31.
Slaughter took on rebuilding jobs at Hearne and Clyde . Hearne was 24-85 in the previous 11 years before Slaughter took aver and they had back to back winning seasons and a 24-19 record during his time there. At Clyde, they were 27-63 in the previous 9 years before he became the Head Coach and they went 23-12 in his 3 years there.
Over 100 candidates applied for the position to fill the spot vacated by previous Mustang Head Coach, Kent Jackson. Jackson was 78-26 over the last 8 years with 8 playoff appearances. He led the Mustangs to a 10-3 record last year. Coach Jackson will be taking over the Head Coach and Athletic Director position at the new Frisco Heritage High School.
Slaughter comes in with plans to pass the ball more than they are accustomed to at Sweetwater. The Mustangs have run the Wishbone and rarely throw the ball. At Clyde, Coach Slaughters 2008 team averaged 180 rushing and 130 passing per game.
