2011 Texas High School Football Games of the Year
It's that time again - when we take a look at the best of the best. We are talking about the 2011 Texas High School Football Games of the Year. During the season, each and every weekend, we see amazing finishes, dramatic performances and inspiring stories.
Once again, we went through more than 200 finalists when choosing our top 25 and once again, it was tough to decide. You'll remember from our show that breaks down some of the "Games that Didn't Make the Cut," that there were many great games that didn't make it into this Top 25.
With this first installment, we look at games #21-25
#25 (Wimberley -- 21, Argyle -- 14)
The Wimberley Texans won their 2nd overall state championship with a win over the Argyle Eagles in what was a great championship game to watch. It was a classic defensive battle in the first half with the teams totaling only 278 yards. Wimberley went in at the half leading 7-3.
What may have been the biggest play of the game was Argyle fumbling the ball out of the end zone when it looked like they were about to take the lead. They took the 2nd half kickoff and marched the ball all the way to the Texan 1 yard line. The Eagle running back was hit right before he crossed the goal line for the score knocking the ball out of the end zone and giving Wimberley the ball. A few plays later offensive player of the game Dennis Smith (he also had 10 tackles on defense) caught a 66 yard touchdown pass to give the Texans a 14-3 lead.
Argyle fought back and made the score 14-11 with 10:37 left in the 4th. Texan running back Trinity Wilson gave the Texans a little breathing room a few plays later though with a 76 yard touchdown run. Wilson was also a key player on defense. Wimberley's Brennan Blakemore put the nail in the Eagle's coffin when he intercepted a pass with Argyle driving to tie the game.
#24 (Euless Trinity -- 38, Colleyville Heritage -- 35 OT)
Midway through the 2011 season, the Trojans of Euless Trinity held on to their number 1 ranking with a much closer than expected overtime victory against Colleyville Heritage. Euless jumped out the early lead 28-14 by halftime, but Colleyville Heritage outscored Euless 21-7 through the second half - their final two touchdowns coming in the fourth quarter and forcing the overtime. Colleyville even had a chance to win at the end of regulation but missed on a 48 yard field goal attempt with just two seconds remaining.
Trinity scored first in overtime on a 37 yard field goal. Colleyville then took over and was forced to try a field goal of their own but it was no good. Heritage's quarterback Cody Thomas finished the night 41-56, 361 yards and 5 TD's.
#23 (Tyler Chapel Hill -- 20, Alvarado -- 19)
Tyler Chapel Hill (15-0) won the Class 3A Division I Championship with a 20-19 victory over Alvarado (14-1).
The Bulldogs from Tyler Chapel Hill started off with a quick 13-0 lead. However, the Indians from Alvarado responded with a few trick plays and tied the score at halftime. During the third quarter, the Bulldogs completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to make the score 20-13. During the fourth quarter, the Indians scored and Coach Jeff Dixon made the decision to go for two, but failed. Tyler Chapel Hill recovered a fumble at their own 16 with 1:38 remaining and were able to run out the clock for the championship.
#22 (Wichita Falls -- 53, Denton -- 49)
Wichita Falls beat Denton with quarterback Dylan Sheffield breaking the all-time state record for yards in a game with 683 yards. Denton took the lead with 54 seconds left but Sheffield turned around and connected on an 81-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds remaining. Wide receiver Chance Garey finished with 10 catches for 270 yards and four touchdowns. The final score was 53-49.
#21 (Dallas Jesuit -- 42, Richardson Berkner -- 34) 4 Overtimes!
Dallas Jesuit Rangers football team knocked off the visiting Berkner Rams by a final score of 42-34 in four overtimes! Richardson Berkner opened the scoring in the first quarter and led 7-0 leading into the second. By halftime, the Rams maintained their lead 14-7. At the end of three, it appeared that Berkner was going to wrap up the game, leading 28-14. Dallas Jesuit shut out the Rams 14-0 in the fourth quarter to tie it up at the end of regulation.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two extra periods, but managed to score 6 each in the third overtime. Tied at 34 all, Dallas Jesuit took the lead and the game 42-34 in the fourth overtime.
Yedidiah Louis was a factor all over the field despite the loss. He completed 6 of 13 passes for 59 yards, ran the ball 43 times for 226 yards and 4 TDs on the ground, caught one pass for 15 yards, punted 4 times for 109 yards and even recorded one tackle.
