2011 Texas High School Football Games of the Year

Once again, we went through more than 200 finalists when choosing our top 25 and once again, it was tough to decide. You'll remember from our show that breaks down some of the "Games that Didn't Make the Cut," that there were many great games that didn't make it into this Top 25.

In this installment, we look at games #11-15

#15 (San Angelo Central -- 41, El Paso Franklin -- 35 5 OTs)

This was one of those games you dream about seeing if you are a hardcore football fan. I know we always hope for overtime because we don't play favorites and just love to see exciting games - we got one here as these squads went into FIVE overtime periods! Franklin looked like they were going to take this game until San Angelo Central scored two late 4th quarter touchdowns to force overtime at 21 all. The first and second overtime were scoreless and they swapped touchdowns in the third OT. Both teams also went for two and got it to force the fourth. Once again, they swapped touchdowns in the fourth overtime, this time they both failed their conversion attempts. In the fifth extra frame, San Angelo Central scored first but failed on the 2 point try. Franklin needed the score and the conversion for the win, but could not convert a 4th down play to give Central the win.

#14 (Austin Lake Travis -- 22, Waco Hewitt Midway -- 7)

The Austin Lake Travis Cavaliers completed their Drive For Five by winning their 5th consecutive state championship with a win over the Panthers from Waco Hewitt Midway. With the win, Lake Travis became the first team to every win 5 in a row. This was a very defensive game where the Cavaliers led 10-0 at the half. Midway made the game interesting when they returned the opening kickoff of the 2nd half for a touchdown. Lake Travis was able to get another field goal and finally a touchdown with 4:40 left in the game to earn the victory. The Cavalier defense held Midway to 177 total yards and forced 4 turnovers. While this may not have been one of the most exciting games of the season, it was history. That alone, is enough to make it into the Games of the Year. Fans watching the Cavaliers with their 5th straight title can say, "I was there..." when history was made.

#13 (Angelton -- 50, Rosenberg Terry -- 49 OT)

Angleton and Rosenberg Terry fought it out in a key district game. Both teams entered the game unbeaten and looked to make a statement in district. It was a tight game and the win came down to a two-point conversion. Terry scored first in overtime but opted to kick the extra point. Angleton followed with a touchdown and decided on the "all or nothing" call of a two point conversion. It was good and Angleton came away with the big district win. Not only was this a close game, but Terry receiver, Derrick Griffin put on a receiving clinic as he caught five touchdown passes in the loss.

#12 (San Antonio Brandeis -- 29, San Antonio Warren -- 28 OT)

In another game that came down to overtime decision-making, San Antonio Brandeis eeked out a victory over San Antonio Warren. The game went to overtime knotted at 21, and Warren quickly scored to go up 28-21. Brandeis struck back with a quick TD. Instead of tying the game with an extra point and going into a second overtime, coach John Campbell decided to go for the win. The decision paid off and they completed a halfback pass to get the win.

#11 (Dallas Highland Park -- 31, Rockwall-Heath -- 30 OT)

This was a battle between not just two undefeated teams - that happens all the time toward the start of every season, but we are talking about two 8-0 teams! This game was tied 24 all at the end of regulation. Rockwall-Heath scored first in OT but the extra point kick was deflected at the line of scrimmage and the ball bounced off of the goal post. Dallas Highland Park needed to score and kick the PAT for the win. The Scots drove down the field and had the ball first and goal at the 5. Rockwall-Heath's defense stiffened and three plays later Highland Park was facing 4th and goal at the 1. They had to go for it and were able to push the ball into the end zone. The extra point was good for the overtime victory.
