Refugio’s Quintanilla, Booker’s Lile Lead Challengers for Career Passing Records
Refugio’s Quintanilla, Booker’s Lile Lead Challengers for Career Passing Records.
There are currently 11 quarterbacks in hot pursuit of Texas’ prestigious career passing records. One has a chance to break two them this season, another could own all three before he plays his final down.
Senior Travis Quintanilla returns to the field for perennial 2A powerhouse Refugio within 4,643 yards of Garrett Gilbert’s record. Quintanilla, who owns the state record for most touchdowns in a game, is also only 59 scores shy of Graham Harrell’s career touchdown mark.
By year’s end, he should own both. As a junior he threw for 4,005 yards and 57 scores, so even a slight improvement in each category means both are his. In his final season, expect him to do just that.
The real question is how long would Quintanilla’s records stand? Hunter Lile is back under center for Class 1A Booker just 5,416 yards, 427 completions and 84 touchdowns shy of the career passing triple crown. And Lile is only a junior!
After throwing for almost 4,000 yards and 50 touchdowns as a sophomore, these records are doomed. If he maintains his current pace of just over 270 completions/year, he will shatter that record as well.
Between Quintanilla and Lile, two records that are over 10 years old will fall in consecutive years. One of which, along with the yardage record, has a chance to be broken twice in two years by kids whose entire hometowns are smaller than a 5A school.
Joining Lile and Quintanilla on all three records lists is 2A Cameron Yoe’s Jason Kopriva. A senior, Kopriva will not be chasing records quite like Quintanilla, though he does have a state title to defend in 2013.
Over in Class 4A, Humble Summer Creek quarterback Aaron Sharp is the third senior to appear on all three lists. The recent Kansas State commit is a favorite to make his first all-state team in 2013, though only has a shot to crack the top-10 of the career touchdown mark.
Each of these players, as well as the other seven active quarterbacks on the records lists, is listed below with their current stats with his placing in parenthesis.
Aaron Sharp, Humble Summer Creek, Sr.: 6,648 yd (102), 416 comp (136), 65 TD (121)
Blake Bogenschultz, Carthage, Sr.: 5,566 yd (NR), 62 TD (NR)
Clay Robertson, Quanah, Jr.: 4,703 yd (NR), 388 comp (168)
Hunter Lile, Booker, Jr.: 7,121 yd (79), 542 comp (40), 83 TD (43)
Travis Quintanilla, Refugio, Sr.: 7,894 yd (47), 386 comp (171), 108 TD (10)
Joseph Kopriva, Cameron Yoe, Sr.: 5,047 yd (NR), 399 comp (153), 61 TD (NR)
Tristan Barajas, Ingleside, Sr.: 7,146 yd (77), 86 TD (NR)
Klark Ashmore, Wellington, Sr.: 5,965 yd (NR), 75 TD (72)
Evan Moore, Alpine, Sr.: 5,999 yd (NR), 407 comp (142)
Taylor Cornelius, Bushland, Sr.: 5,359 yd (NR)
Seth Gonzales, El Paso Chapin, Sr.: 4,927 yd (NR)
While not all of these players have a shot to break a record, appearing on these lists is an honor in itself. As passers like these continue to improve and high school offenses with them, it is becoming increasingly apparent that even the most illustrious record is no longer safe.
