Mason Punchers (15-0) and New Deal Lions (15-0) UIL Class 2A DI Texas High School Football State Championship.
The Mason Punchers (15-0) beat the New Deal Lions (15-0) in the Class 2A DI Texas High School Football State Championship game 44-6. This was the 3rd Championship appearance for the Punchers. They won in 2011 and lost in 2014. This was the first Championship game for New Deal. The Punchers played great on both sides of the ball especially on defense where they held New Deal quarterback Jett Whitfield (4,200 yards during the season with 62 total touchdowns) and receiver D.K. Blaylock (A 6’5 The Iowa State commit who had 51 catches for 1,161 yards and 20 touchdowns on the season) in check.
Mason took the opening kickoff and scored on a 1 yard run by quarterback Otto Wofford to take a 7-0 lead with 9:30 left in the first. On New Deal's next possession they had a long pass get intercepted by Puncher defensive back Roman Coe at the Puncher 20 and he returned it to the 38. Mason went goes 3 and out and as they went to punt the snap went over the punters head. The punter was able to recover it near the end zone and run it out to the 11 where New Deal took over. From there, New Deal was able to convert on a 3rd and 14 to score from the 15 on a pass from Jett Whitfield to Kendell Dunn. The extra point was blocked and Mason still led 7-6 with 3:43 remaining. Mason got their running game going and punched it in on an 11 yard run by Klay Klaemer. The extra point was good and Mason led 14-6 with 2:47 left. For the first quarter Mason had 95 total yard and New Deal had 62. The standout player of the quarter was Mason defensive lineman Slone Stulz who had 3.5 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss.
New Deal faced a long 4th down play at the Mason 24 early in the 2nd quarter and was unable to convert and turned the ball over on downs. Mason took over and went on a drive that consumed over 8 minutes. They scored on a 2 yard run by Jake Cockerham. Mason now led 21-6 with 3:05 left until halftime.New Deal had a good drive going where they made it into Mason territory but a double reverse pass was intercepted by Mason defensive back Tyson Keller. Mason got the ball at their own 46 with less than 1 minute left in the half. New Deal got the ball first to open the 2nd half but go 3 and out. Mason scored on their first possession on a 55 yard run by Cockerham to make the score 31-6 with 9:16 left in the 3rd. New Deal went 3 and out again on their 2nd possession. Mason converted on a 4th down play to continue their next drive and were able to score on a 10 yard run by Klaemer. The extra point was no good bringing the score to 37-6. New Deal punted and Mason was driving as the 3rd quarter ended. Through 3 quarters, Mason has 355 total yards compared to New Deals 115.
Mason got a touchdown run from Chandler Buntyn to bring the score to 44-6 with 11:14 remaining in the game. New Deal went 3 and out and tried a fake punt that did not work and Mason took over at the New Deal 48. They came up short on a 31 yard field goal attempt with 2:07 remaining.
