Updated: May 27, 2009
Here are the pools, breakdowns and of course my predictions for the Texas City State Qualifying Tournament this weekend.
Pool A: Texas City, Fort Bend Kempner, Montgomery, Pearland
The host Texas City has only gone 1-5 in tournament play this year but they have talent in RB Justin Branch. Fort Bend Kempner has gone 3-1 making the semifinals at Alvin Manvel two weeks ago. They are led by QB Jon Shalala, RB Josh Bell and WR Kenneth Bibbons. Montgomery has gone 1-2 with a win over host Texas City 25-19. Pearland has gone 2-1 and looked very tough at the Texans (Sunday) SQT. They will be led by DB Jeff Phillips and ATH Claudius Smithers.
Mike's Pick: Pearland
Pool B: Alvin, Channelview, Clear Creek, Katy Morton Ranch
Alvin has a 2-1 record this year including a 41-20 win over pool opponent Clear Creek. Channelview is 3-5 making the semifinals at the Texans (Saturday) SQT. They are led by RB Denzel Granderson, WR Chris Hawkins and DB Dominique Jefferson. Clear Creek is 0-3 in SQT action this year but they have plenty of talent in QB Adam Behrle, WR's Christopher Collins and Brent Comardelle, ATH Marcus Mata and DB Brandon Speth. Katy Morton Ranch will be an intersting team to watch with DB Floyd Madison and HOuston Sharpstown transfer QB Sam Carter (1759 yrds passing in 2008).
Mike's Pick: Channelview
Pool C: Houston Chavez, Friendswood, La Porte, Beaumont Ozen
Houston Chavez has already qualified and have a 7-1 record. They won the Texans (Saturday) SQT and look to be a very solid, physical 7-on-7 team. Friendswood is 1-2 in sQT play and they will feature RB/DB Andrew Cole (1150 yards rushing in 2008). La Porte will feature RB Kendrick Perkins (1762 yards rushing in 2008) while Beaumont Ozen will feature RB James White and LB Pierre Harmon.
Mike's Pick: Friendswood
Pool D: Baytown Lee, Clear Springs, Pearland Dawson, Port Arthur Memorial
Baytown Lee was a surprising 0-3 at the Cy-Falls SQT and they will rely on DB Trey Murray to bring them back. Clear Springs is 2-1 in SQT play incluing a win over pool opponent Pearland Dawson 27-20. They will showcase DB DeChe' Milburn. Pearland Dawson is 2-4 this year behind QB Darian Lazard, Houston committ RB Xavier Brown RB and DB's David Farris and Caleb Williams.
Port Arthur Memorial will feature 3 star recruit LB Earl Hines, RB Oristes Hughes and DB Michael Johnson.
Mike's Pick: Pearland Dawson
