-
Updated: July 7, 2009
Here are the Division I State Championship pool breakdowns with stats, key players and of course my predictions. (POOLs E - H)
Pool E: Gatesville, Goldthwaite, Marion, Pilot Point
Gatesville will be making their 2nd consecutive appearance going to the Quarterfinals last year. Goldthwaite is the only 1A team in the championships. This is their 1st appearance and they will be relying on 2 running backs, JR RB Jonathon Williams and RB James Harden. Marion is making their 4th overall and 2nd consecutive appearance. They made it to the Division I Semifinals back in 2000. Their two star players are DB Sean Hesler and JR WR Nathayn DeHoyos. Pilot Point is making their 2nd overall appearance going to the Quarterfinals in 2007. RB Jarman Johnson and QB Seth Tilley will lead the way for them. Look for Pilot Point to make another run.
Mike's Picks: 1. Pilot Point 2. Goldthwaite 3. Marion 4. Gatesville
Pool F: Carthage, Glen Rose, Wills Point, Wimberley
All 4 of these team are in Class 3A. Carthage and Glen Rose are both making their 3rd consecutive appearance. Carthage will be led by TE Trevor Murphy and JR LB Kendell Thompson while Glen Rose will feature WR Ty Taylor (1094 yards receiving in 2008) and DB Immanuel Morales (7 INTs in 2008). The pass/catch duo of QB Trent Jurica (1903 yards passing in 2008) and WR Steven Currigan will lead Wills Point during their 1st appearance. This is also Wimberley's 1st state tournament. Their key player will be RB Dennis Smith. Watch out for a very athletic Carthage team.
Mike's Picks: 1. Carthage 2. Wills Point 3. Glen Rose 4. Wimberley
Pool G: Abilene Wylie, Hardin-Jefferson, Palestine Westwood, Navasota
Again, all 4 of these teams are in 3A. Abilene Wylie is making their 1st appearance but they also qualified for the Division I tournament at the Abilene SQT. They also qualified for the Division II tournament and chose to play with schools more their size. Hardin-Jefferson and Palestine Westwood are both making their 1st appearance. Hardin-Jefferson will feature RB Jacoby Turner and QB Blake Venable. Palestine Westwood got a huge boost in the offseason when QB Daryn Alves transferred from McKinney Boyd. Navasota is making their 3rd consecutive appearance. They were in the 2007 Quarterfinals and was the 2008 Runner Up. They will be led by DB Kye Hildreth. Abilene Wylie may be the best team in the tournament
Mike's Picks: 1. Abilene Wylie 2. Palestine Westwood 3. Navasota 4. Hardin-Jefferson
Pool H: Lago Vista, Lorena, Rockdale, Snyder
Lorena and Rockdale are both replacement teams for schools that could not make it. Lago vista, Lorena and Snyder are all making their 1st appearance at the state tournament while Rockdale is making their 3rd consecutive showing. Watch out for a very talented Snyder team.
Mike's Picks: 1. Snyder 2. Lago Vista 3. Rockdale 4. Lorena
