-
Updated: July 8, 2009
Here are the Division I State Championship pool breakdowns with stats, key players and of course my predictions. (POOLs A - D)
Pool A: Garland Lakeview Centennial, El Paso Bel Air, Klein, Austin Lake Travis
Garland Lakeview Centennial who is making their 2nd overall appearance will feature WR Brandon Hobody while RB Chris Avena will be the key player for El Paso Bel Air who is making their 1st showing. Klein is appearing for the 8th overall time and will be bringing a lot of talent. They will be led by QB Jamie Peebles, RB Patrick Johnson, TE Eric Tomlinson, LB Kevin Kisseberth, LB Alex Muddiman, DB Johnny Family and RB Dakota Barnes. Klein was a very impressive 5-0 vs. tournament teams during SQT play. Austin Lake Travis is making their 7th overall and 6th consecutive appearance making it to the Quarterfinals last year. Their key players will be JR QB Michael Brewer (son of former Longhorns quarterback Robert Brewer), LB Quinton Crow, DB Ian Lazarus, WR Andy Erickson and WR Conner Floyd. They were 3-1 against tournament competition. Even without Garrett Gilbert, Lake Travis is a threat
Mike's Picks: 1. Austin Lake Travis 2. Klein 3. Garland Lakeview Centennial 4. El Paso Bel Air
Pool B: Keller Central, El Paso Chapin, Langham Creek, Marble Falls
This pool features 2 newcomers (El Paso Chapin and Marble Falls), one 2nd year team in Keller Central. Langham Creek is the seasoned team here making their 5th consecutive appearance. Chapin will bring some star power with QB Anthony Campuzano (2045 yards passing in 2008), RB Cori Sanchez, WR Abel Rodriguez, DB Charlie Alva (7 INTs in 2008) and Isaac Prado (6 INTs). Langham Creek will be led by QB Will Bryant (2440 yrds passing in 2008), WR Mitchell Juergens (854 yards receiving in 2008) and LB Efrem Oliphant (Committed to Houston). They went 3-4 in SQT play but two of those losses were by only 1 point. Marble Falls will be relying on RB Austin Sparks and DB Justin Garcia. Again, you have to go with the experienced team.
Mike's Picks: 1. Langham Creek 2. El Paso Chapin 3. Marble Falls 4. Keller Central
Pool C: Mansfield Legacy, Klein Forest, Lufkin, Mission
Mansfield Legacy is a 2nd year varsity program making their 1st appearance. They will be relying on WR Rodney Whitmore. Legacy had a 2-5 record vs. tournament teams in SQT play. Klein Forest is making their 5th overall and 3rd consecutive appearance. They have lots of talent and will be looking for LB Cameron Nwosu (Committed to Rice), WR/DB Adrian Bennett, WR/DB Damien Payne, ATH Harvey Williams and LB D.J. Simon to lead them. Klein Forest made it to the Quarterfinals back in 1999. They went 3-3 vs. tournament teams in SQT play but their 3 losses were by a combined 14 points. Lufkin is making their 10th consecutive appearance at the state tournament. As always, they will be bringing a lot of talent. DB Carrington Byndom (Committed to Texas Top 20 S in the nation), WR Quinn Trimble (55-1146 yards receiving in 2008), WR Tra Horace, WR Kasey Jones will all play key roles. Mission will be making their 2nd overall appearance. Lufkin will be very hard to handle.
Mike's Picks: 1. Lufkin 2. Klein Forest 3. Mansfield Legacy 4. Mission
Pool D: Plano, Katy, New Braunfels Canyon, Beaumont Westbrook
Plano made it to the 2001 Semifinals and the Quarterfinals last year. This will be their 7th overall and 5th consecutive appearance. They will be led by a very talented group of receivers in WR Robert Robinson, TE Ashton Williams and WR Holt Hoetger. Plano finished 3-4 against tournament competition in SQT play. Katy made it to the 1999 Semifinals and the 2000 Quarterfinals and will be making their 11th overall and 8th consecutive appearance, only missing out on the 2001 tournament. This will be a very talented team led by RB Will Jeffrey (1483 yards rushing in 2008), QB Michael Stojkovic, WR Ryan James, TE Zachary Swanson (committed to Stanford) and DB Sam Holl. New Braunfels Canyon is making their 1st appearance and they will be led by WR/DB Tyler Figol while Beaumont Westbrook is making their 4th overall and 3rd consecutive appearance. Katy will be going for another state championship....this time in 7 on 7.
Mike's Picks: 1. Katy 2. Plano 3. New Braunfels Canyon 4. Beaumont Westbrook
