Top Weekly Performances in Texas High School Football 9/23/13
Central Texas:
In a matchup to top 10 teams in Class 4A. #10 Elgin’s Simmons brothers combined for 416 yards to upset #8 Georgetown 37-0. Da’Trean Simmons rushed for 180 yards and two scores, while QB brother Te’Rel had 436 yards and three touchdowns. Cibolo Steele’s Justin Stockton rushed for 283 yards and four scores as the Knights pounded Austin Westlake 49-21. Stockton (Texas Tech commit) closed the first half with a 63 yard touchdown run and raced 67 yards to paydirt on the Knights opening play of the second half. Unbeaten Manor scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to avoid an upset by Bastrop, winning 26-23. Cedar Park stormed to a 38-7 half time lead in a 44-14 win over Round Rock Westwood. Pflugerville Hendrickson pulled their starters after halftime in a 42-16 win over Bryan to also remain unbeaten. Michael McCann threw for 510 yards and four scores as Cedar Ridge beat San Antonio MacArthur 56-28. Port Lavaca Calhoun shutout out Austin Reagan 47-0 as Corry Williams rushed for 101 yards and three TDs for the Sand Crabs. Converse Judson scored four touchdowns in a six minute span in the first quarter and ran away from San Antonio East Central 49-7. Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey threw for 300 yards and five touchdowns in the first half. Smithson Valley throttled hot QB Cody Ennis and beat San Antonio Madison 47-20.
West Texas:
West Texas QB’s had big nights. Bushland’s Taylor Cornelius was 41/48 for 421 yards and six scores ina 46-27 win over Pampa. Canadian’s Ben Arbuckle was 27/40 for 313 yards and four scores in a 34-7 win over Abernathy. Stephenville’s Jarrett Stidham was 10/19 for 195 yds and three touchdowns, but also rushed for 108 yards and two more scores as the Jackets beat Waco La Vega 56-23. Big Spring’s Tobyn Tannehill threw for 248 yards and rushed for 115 yards as Big Spring outscored Andrews 61-48. Andrew’s Shane Dolgener threw for 271 yards and rushed for 76 in a losing cause. Lorenzo Joe (Texas commit) threw for 246 yards rushed for 44, and accounted for four touchdowns as Abilene Cooper shutout Lubbock Coronado 52-0.
Dallas/Fort Worth:
The top matchup in DFW was the District 7-5A opener between DeSoto and Cedar Hill. DeSoto took care of business, winning 47-20 as QB Desmon White completed 14/18 ypasses for 228 yards and rushed for 114, accounting for three touchdowns. In a wild private school game, Fort Worth All Saints beat Saint Marks 58-21. All Saints QB Foster Sawyer (TCU commit) threw for 400 yards and five TDs with Kendall Adams hauling in 10 passes for 221 yards and five of those touchdowns. St. Mark’s QB John Webb threw for 369 yards and three scores. Adams also had three interceptions. Top Ranked Allen beat Lewisville Hebron 36-17 as Kyler Murray threw for 216 and rushed for 121, accounting for four touchdowns. Fort Worth Dunbar edged Birdville 49-44. Dunbar QB La”quarrian Peoples threw for 318 yards and five scores, with Missouri commit Stepfawn Hughes catching five balls for 200 and three scores. Birdville tailback Xavier Turner scored four times but was held to just 136 yards on the ground. Garland Christian’s Braxtown Berry, a Ford Player of the Week winner, threw for 464 yards and 8 TDs and rushed for 128 yards and another in a 71-12 win over Kennedale Fellowship. Sunnyvale beat Maypearl 44-21 as DFW’s top passer Ryan Cottingame completed 15/18 for 283 yards and three TD’s. Plano’s defense gave up its first points of the season, but throttled Garland Naaman Forest 35-7, holding Naaman’s Michael Nelson , DFW’s leading rusher to just 48 yards. Garland Sachse rolled up 201 yards and 21 points in the first quarter and rolled by Flower Mound 55-16. Sachse QB Kent Myers threw for 282 yards and three scores. Dallas Lincoln held off Dallas Madison to win the South Dallas Super Bowl 35-26. Texas commit Emanuel Porter hauled in six passes for 122 yards and two long score to lead the Tigers.
Houston:
A lot of games got cancelled or postponed in the Greater Houston area because of storms. Clear Creek’s Jarrett Hildreth passed for 138 yards rushed for 116 and accounted for four touchdowns to lead Creek by Baytown Sterling 42-14. Junior Jaylon Henderson passed for 194 yards, rushed for 70 and accounted for five touchdowns in a 50-6 Kingwood Park pasting of New Caney Porter. Baylor TE Commit Jordan Feurbacher had 130 yards receiving and two TD catches for KWPK. Katy remained unbeaten, shutting out Mayde Creek 42-0. Junior Rodney Anderson rushed for 163 yards and 2 TDs. Crosby’s Walter twins had big nights. QB Aston rushed for 240 yards and three scores while RB Austin rushed for 268 yards and one tds. Beaumont Westbrook’s junior QB Isaac Aubrey had 299 yards total offense and five touchdowns as the Bruins beat Houston Chavez 53-24.
Saturday’s postponements led to some big performances. Sophomore Griffin Lay rushed for 221 yards and three scores to lead Kingwood past Klein Forest 45-27. Junior Brett Winnegan had 214 yards rushing and two scores in Pearland Dawson’s 49-13 win over Clear Falls. Clear Springs edged Aldine Eisenhower 53-50. Junior Matt Guidry rushed for 204 yards, caught passes for 184 and accounted for five touchdowns for Springs, while Texas commit Donald Catalon rushed for 202 yards and two scores for Ike. Junior Jonathan Giles passes for 195 yards and five touchdowns as Elkins smothered Westbury 74-7. North Forest beat Milby 47-29, but Milby’s junior QB Camreyon Jacobs passed for 341 yards and three scores. Demarcus Felton rushed for 301 yards in a losing cause as Spring Dekaney was beaten by Klein Oak 32-24.
East Texas:
The rain forced a lot of cancellations in East Texas as well. Longview smacked Lufkin 55-20 in the 74th meeting between these two schools as two of the Lobo junior stars had big nights. RB JaMycal Hasty rushed for 201 yards and three scores, while WR Ke Ke Coutee averaged 24 yards/catch on a 194 yard night with two touchdowns. The Whitehouse combination of Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech commit) and Jake Parker were red hot in a 59-3 beating of Marshall. Mahomes threw 5 touchdown passes with three going to Parker as part of a 338 yard night. Parker totaled 141 yards on the night. KD Cannon (Baylor commit) had a huge night for Mount Pleasant. Cannon had 106 yards rushing, 96 yards receiving, and a 95 yard kickoff return but the Tigers lost to Kilgore 48-20. Sophomore Logan Fuller had 148 yards rushing and five TDs as Athens shutout Rusk 49-0. In East Texas' most thrilling game Carthage went 74 yards in three plays with Blake Bogenschutz and Tevin Pipkin hooking up on a 32 yard screen pass for a score with just 24 seconds remaining to take a 44-40 lead. However Nacogdoches roared down the field and Carthage needed to stop Nac on the two yard line as time ran out to preserve the win. Carthage and Whitehouse clash next week. Gilmer’s defense recorded six turnovers, returning two for scores in a 54-21 win over Daingerfield.
In East Texas wildest game, replayed Saturday because of storms, Tyler Lee edged Texarkana Texas High 38-37, with the difference being a blocked extra point. However Lee was forced to punt with eight seconds remaining. Texarkana blocked the punt, with the ball rebounding to defensive lineman Demarquan Bailey, only to see Lee chase him down from behind just 20 yards for paydirt to preserve the win.
