Five BIG Things in Texas High School Football
10/8/13
Its that time again... time for my Five BIG Things! These are the things that stood out for me recently as it relates to Texas high school football. As usual, they are not listed in order of importance - just as they come to me.
1. Told you Texas City was for real! - Pearland Dawson again rolled into their game against Texas City undefeated and pundits were saying, "this is the game that will expose the Stingarees." Well, it did. It showed that they are indeed for real. The two teams went into the game having rolled over all their opponents and only Texas City's streak continued in the 44-14 trouncing of the Eagles.
2. Yes, that is Danbury sitting at 6-0 – Mike and I used to play against the Danbury Panthers when we were Industrial Cobras and it has been a long time since there has been anything good to say about the team. That time is now. The Panthers are destroying opponents in District 13-2A-DII. It looks as though their final regular season game against East Bernard will be for the district title and both teams will likely remain undefeated until then. It should be a fun one!
3. Hendrickson standing alone – Pflugerville Hendrickson is clearly the class of District 16-5A as they are not only sitting at 6-0, but their defense is shutting everyone down. The Hawks have only give up 10 points a game and the rest of the district has given up 3 and four times that much. As impressive as the defense has been, the offense too leads the entire district in scoring.
4. Scoring - the extremes - I took some time to see who has scored the most and who has scored the least so far this year. Now, I am no "Mighty" Mike Wright so I can't guarantee I didn't miss someone. I have the Six-man Strawn Greyhounds leading the state in scoring with 404 points despite a 62-16 loss in their opener against Ira. I only find one team in the state that hasn't scored at all yet - the Como-Pickton Eagles who have scored nothing in their 5 losses while losing by an average score of 65-0. Ouch.
5. District 17-5A looking like a dog fight again! - This is one of those districts seems to always have battles right down to the end. As of right now Cy-Fair, Cy-Creek, Cy-Ridge and Cy-Woods are all sitting at 3-1 in district with Langham Creek, Cy-Springs and Cy-Ranch sitting just one game behind. When a district is that knotted up, it makes every game like the Super Bowl and keeps the fans off every team sitting on the edge of their seat. There is some great football going on at Pridgeon Stadium and the Berry Center... getcha some!
Have a great week and make sure to get out there and enjoy a couple games as the season is going by fast.
