Mike Says: This is a re-match of the 2009 Championship game where Aledo won 35-21. The Cubs come in led by a couple of Juniors on the offensive side with QB Caleb Hill (2,649 yards passing) and RB Earnest Patterson (2,355 yards rushing). Their defense is fast and is led by DB Desmond Lockett who had 7 INTs on the season. The Bearcats feature the highest scoring team in Texas High School Football history. The Aledo fans have been telling us all year this is the best Aledo team ever. I thought that Whitehouse was the team that could beat them but that game never happened. Brenham was a Top 30 team to enter the season and had a magical run to their 3rd ever championship game. This one will be all Aledo though. The BEARCATS win their 5th overall championship and 4th in the last 5 seasons 48-27!!
Chris Says: I really have no choice in this one. I made the mistake of not ranking Aledo #1 prior to the season start and have been hearing about it all year from rabid fans. You know what - they're right! I have been a fan of Brenham for years and absolutely love that they are returning to power. The city and the program deserve all the success they are having. Aledo on the other hand has had more than their share of success recently, but hey - that doesn't mean it is going to end. Aledo is a stronger team that hasn't given up over 16 points in any game all season while shattering the scoring record. This powerhouse team will take care of business one more time. BEARCATS take another trophy home 52-16!!
LSG Intern William Says: For Brenham the playoffs have been a fun ride, they started out winning three close games and even convincingly won their semi-final match-up against Calhoun (56-21). They’re running into a road block against Aledo. Aledo hasn’t had much competition at all this year. Ennis gave them their closest game all year, 29-6. Aledo has the most talent in these playoffs and will win 38-10.
LSG/Aledo Fan Says: Only Aledo can be said to have “escaped” from Ennis winning 29-6. Aledo had only 3 days to prepare for Ennis, a team that averaged 450 yards per game (320 rushing 130 passing) and 44 points per game before playing Aledo. Aledo held them to 70 yards rushing – their playoff average and 85 yards passing. Aledo averaged about 108 yards allowed rushing during the season due to second string playing in second half most of the year. Unlike the Brenham PLC game played indoors. the Aledo Ennis game took place outdoors in the cold windy weather. Aledo has had a full week to prepare for Brenham and the game is indoors. The Cubs are averaging only 400 yards and 40 points per game, 220 rushing and 180 passing. The Cubs rely heavily on one rusher who has over 2200 yards, as Aledo did in 2009 with J Gray. So while it is likely Aledo will shut down their run as they have everyone else with their 4-3, Brenham usually relies more on their passing game anyway. They have three talented receivers with more than 500 yards each. So the challenge will likely be in the secondary for Aledo’s defense. Aledo has 27 sacks, 20 interceptions and 14 fumble recoveries. On the opposite side, Aledo has averaged 340 yards rushing and 200 yards passing. The Cub defense cannot focus on one person as the Aledo D can. Aledo has 5 rushers with more than 600 yards and 5 receivers with over 400 yards. The Cubs have 20 sacks, 16 interceptions and 14 fumble recoveries. If the Cub line can penetrate Aledo, which even Ennis couldn’t do, then they might be able to force Aledo to rely more on it’s passing game – as it also has done during the year. So the challenge for the Cubs may also be in their secondary. Having said that, as is usually the case, the battle for the LOS will ultimately determine which offense succeeds and which defense succeeds. The Aledo depth in their line will have to be offset by desire on the part of the Cubs. It should prove to be a great game.
LSG Fan Poll Says: The fan voting in both the of the Class 5A games are runaway, but this game is the most lopsided for the games from Class 4A and below. Aledo (68%) is the clear leader over Brenham (32%.) It appears the fans are not giving Brenham any love at all and virtually no chance of winning the title. There is virtually no disagreement over who will win win it... Aledo BEARCATS take the crown - the fans have spoken!
