2 Wilds Ones As Midland & Midway Get Big Wins

The Midland Bulldogs and the Waco Hewitt Midway Panthers went into their games Friday night as underdogs to Top 20 teams. Both of them came up big with surprising upsets and made the state take notice. The Bulldogs took a double overtime win over #20 Smithson Valley while the Panthers beat #16 Austin Lake Travis.

Midland and Smithson Valley ended regulation play tied up at 19-19. It was a strange way to get there as Midland missed 2 extra points with one of them being blocked and returned for 2 points by Valley. In the 2nd overtime, Valley had the ball 1st and goal at the 6 but could not punch it in after being stopped inside the 1 yard line on 4th down. On the previous possession, Midland converted a 4th & 16 to set up a touchdown to take the lead.

The Midway, Lake Travis game was a rematch of the 2011 Class 4A Division I state championiship game. Midway scored on a surprising 71 yard pass play to take a 38-30 lead with less than 2 minutes remaining. The Cavaliers were able to get into Midway territory but ran out of time.
