Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year
Winner: LB James Lockhart (Ennis)
Linebacker, James Lockhart was the leader of a very tough state championship defense. He added 140 tackles and 10 sacks to his stellar high school totals (367 tackles, 26 sacks) en route to their 5th state title and the first for Ennis since 2004.

2. LB Thomas Hutchings (Cedar Park)
This dual-threat superstar (he also rushed 105 times for a team-leading 1,173 yards and 17 touchdowns) notched 174 tackles including 34 TFL (tackles for loss) during their run to the state title game. Cedar Park finished the season with a 12-4 record and narrowly missed winning a state title 38-35.

3. LB D’Vonta Hinton (Texas City)
After his Junior season (158 tackles including 27 for loss and five forced fumbles) D'Vonta was the odds on favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year. Although the Stingarees had a big dropoff from their 2013 season, Hinton's numbers as a senior (88 tackles 12 Tackles For Loss) were enough to earn him a runner-up spot.

4. DB Johnathan Durham (Aledo)
Johnathan Durham is the definition of shut-down defensive back. As the lone returning starter from the 2013 championship season he anchored the Aledo defensive. Durham's 4.4 speed, leadership and talent made him the clear leader on the defense that only gave up 290 points all year.
