Wildcats take 52-13 Homecoming Victory
CANADIAN - The Wildcats of Canadian faced another worthy opponent this week hosting a scrappy 3A Childress squad on a Homecoming night which celebrated 50 years of Canadian’s mascot, Willy Wildcat.
Canadian’s NASCAR offense displayed the same form in the game’s first drive (6 plays, 72 yards, 1:19 mins) as in Week 3’s first drive taking only 3 seconds longer. But what the Childress offense had in store for a typically stingy Wildcat defense was a different story, moving the ball successfully and becoming the first team to score against Canadian in the first half since last season’s Championship game with Mason. The Bobcats first impressive 68 yard drive engineered by Sr. QB Bryce Bowman, saw RB Austin Gonzales receive a play-action pass for 37 yards, but stalled out on the 1 yard line with Canadian’s DB Manny Ramsey knocking down a fade route pass in the end zone on 4th down.
After an un-fielded Childress punt was downed on the half-yard line by WR Garrett Stephens, Canadian went to work on a 99 yard drive culminating in the second of five TDs by RB Chance Cook, who had 275 yards on 22 carries rushing for the night. Cook’s third TD went 66 yards on an off-tackle play showing his impressive speed as he broke through the secondary gaining ground on his defenders all the way to the end zone. Canadian’s kicker, Benigno Heredia was equally impressive with a 42 yard FG with 5:38 left in the 2 quarter.
Childress took advantage of a Canadian turnover in the 2nd quarter quickly moving into the red zone scoring on a TD strike from Bowman to a wide open Stephens from the 11 yard line. It would be their first of only two scores of the night, the second coming as the clock ran out in the 4th quarter, another Bowman to Stephens connection with no time left for the PAT.
Although the Bobcats moved the ball well in the first half, making more first downs in one half than any opponent of Canadian this season, their scoring hopes were always dashed in the red zone or by an INT. Canadian’s pass defense prevented Childress from a successful aerial attack with INTs by DBs Cameron Copley, Nick Dumbauld, and a third by LB Sawyer Cook. The quick, tenacious defensive front of DE Cory Chidester, NG Clay Dumbauld, and DE Cooper Trolinger supplied the pressure on QB Bowman as expected, drawing several holding calls through the game.
Canadian QB Tanner Schafer’s Air Canada attack (21 for 28, 281 yards) only produced one passing TD, a 24 yard bubble screen to WR Cameron Copley, but its impact on moving the ball was not diminished throughout the game, totaling 294 yards of the 620 total yards racked up by the Wildcats. The Wildcat scoring was finally done for the night with a TD run of 14 yards by RB Bailey Urschel with 9:33 left in the 4th quarter.
Canadian’s defense felt the sting of some good play calling by the Bobcats in the first half with some offensive plays and schemes not seen in the film room prior to game time. This will certainly aid next week’s preparation for a much-to-be-hyped showdown in Vernon next Friday night with the 2014 State Runner-up Class 2ADII Albany Lions. This matchup should be the most challenging game on the regular season schedule for both programs, becoming a litmus test for everyone in Class 2A to gauge the strength and progress of the Lions and the Wildcats going into conference play.
