Buffs Score 28 Straight and then Fight off Tigers to Advance
Houston NRG- The final game of a three-pack of Regional Finals in Houston saw the third straight game decided on the final play. The A&M Consolidated Tigers and Fort Bend Marshall Buffalos took to the Houston Texans home field for the right to move on in the 2016 playoffs.
Both teams traded three and outs to start the game. Tiger quarterback Cade Williams then made good first down yardage while looking for a block to spring him to the 30. Robert Franklin followed that up by running all the way down to the 2. He then banged it in from there, 7-0 Tigers.
The second quarter began with a huge 4th and 4 at the Consolidated 24. Jabari James fired too high for his intended target - turnover on downs. Jakobe Sheffield had the first big break for the Buffs picking off a Williams pass and returning from his 46 to 41 yards back to the 13 of the Tigers. But a Buff halfback pass was picked in the end zone by Chase Martinez.
The Tiger continued to look like world-beaters. Brian Darby made two drive sustaining grabs to keep Consolidated moving. Cade Williams then made two nice jukes before he danced in from 11 yards out. He extended the Tiger lead to 2 touchdowns, 14-0.
Marshall finally got something going before the half. James found a receiver from his 43 down to the 4 yard line. Antonio Brooks scored from 1 yard out to put the Buffs on the board, 14-7.
Marshall had good 2nd half field possession to start the second half at the 50 yard line. James then had a long pass to Henry Thomas to the 6 yard line. James then flipped out a pass to Korey King and he stretched out for a 6 yard score to tie the game at 14 all.
King’s next touch resulted in another score. This time it was stunning. After Marshall forced a Tiger punt, King grabbed the ball at the 19 and then jetted down the right sideline for a beautiful 81 yard return, 21-14. It was the three straight touchdowns for the Buffs.
The Buffs weren’t done. And nor was Korey King. He made an absolute circus catch from 27 yards out for his next display of magic. The score marked a 21-0 3rd quarter run for Marshall and left it at 28-14 overall.
As everything seemed to be looking to go against A&M Consolidated and with time running out, the Tigers mounted a last push. Steven Ray pulled in a dramatic 51 yard catch to put the Tigers within reach of the endzone. Burl Carraway pulled in a 10-yard score that cut the deficit to 28-21.
With enough time remaining to tie it up, Consolidated went for the onside kick but it was recovered by Marshall. Unable to make a game saving first down, the Buffs punted and left the Tigers with one final chance. Consolidated moved the ball deep into Marshall territory and even had so short passes into the endzone that didn't pay off as the Buffalos took the win.
Fort Bend Marshall will next face College Station.
