Danaher Looking to Break Coaching Record

Phil Danaher 426 winsCorpus Christi Calallen head coach Phil Danaher has a chance to break the all-time record for career coaching wins this week. His Wildcats play rival Corpus Christi Flour Bluff this week.

Calallen has an 8-1 record this season but for a while this season, 3 of those wins looked to be forfeited games due to an ineligible player. Those 3 forfeited games were reinstated by the UIL (video) making the record is officially back to 8-1.

Coach Danaher's 8-1 record gives him an all-time coaching record of 426-107-4. He is now tied with legendary head coach G.A. Moore who retired with a record of 426-92-9.

Chris Says: The playoff system put in place by District 30-5A is so cool.  I just love how they get to play a game for seeding right at the end of the regular season.  I think the Wildcats have to be the standout favorites not only because they are a really good team, but because of the prospect of breaking Moore's record this week.  Calallan win by 14!!

Mike Says: Calallen lead the all-time series against Flour Bluff 34-18 BUT they are 5-7 against them in the last 12 games. I have the Wildcats favored by 15 in this one. Good Luck Coach!!

Danaher on Breaking the Record

Coach Danaher was our guest on the LSG Coaching Show earlier this year where we broke down all his coaching stops and learned a lot about his philosophy. When the subject of the record came up, Danaher said, "When I was a young coach, I was at a clinic and I heard it was very important to write down your goals.  That night I went home, found a piece of notebook paper and wrote my family goals (be a good Christian and good father) and I'd like my two sons to play high school football and get college scholarships.  In coaching, I wanted to coach the high school all-star game, and win a state championship."

He added, "My wife found that piece of paper recently and I realized I have accomplished every one except I have not won a state championship and have not coached a high school all-star game.  There is no all-star game anymore, but I can still work on a state championship.  To be the winningest coach in Texas high school football history was never a goal.  I didn't even know how many games I had won until people started talking about it."
