Gunter 43, Boling 7

Gunter Tigers (15-0) vs. Boling Bulldogs (13-2)
5 p.m. Thursday, Arlington's AT&T Stadium

AT&T Stadium - The Gunter Tigers got a big win over the Boling Bulldogs in the Class 3A Division II state championship game 43-7. This was Gunters first championship victory in their first championship game. Boling was playing in their 2nd championship game. They won the 2A title in 1972.

Boling started the game with the ball but fumbled on their end of the field and defensive back Dylan Jantz recovered. Four plays later, Gunter quarterback Trey Carr scored from 1 yard out. With 9:03 left in the opening quarter, Gunter led 7-0. The teams traded punts and after another punt by Boling, Gunter was able to get another score when running back Colson Stovall carried it over from 1 yard out. The quarter ended with Boling driving.

After Boling punted, the Tigers went on an 89 yard drive capped by a 5 your Stovall touchdown run. That made the score 21-0 with 5:48 left until halftime. Boling got on the board quickly after that when Ronald Krushall returned the kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to make the score 21-7. Gunter responded when Stovall broke 5 tackles on his way to a 22 yard score. Carr carried it for the 2 point conversion to make it 29-7 with 4:04 left until half. Boling did score on their next possession but it was called back due to a penalty. The half ended with Gunter leading 29-7.

The half time stats show Gunter with 203 rushing yards to Bolings total of 58 yards. Carr had 93 yards and Stovall had 86 for Gunter. Another stat that stood out was 3rd down conversions. Gunter was 3 of 4 while Boling was 1 of 5.

Gunter got the ball first in the 2nd half but could not convert on a field goal attempt. Boling was unable to get anything going and Gunter got another touchdown run from Stovall. That makes the score 36-7 with 1:50 left in the 3rd quarter. The quarter ended with Boling in Gunter territory.

That Boling drive was stopped when Gunter defensive back Jantz intercepted the ball at the Gunter 9. Jantz then capped off the drive with a nice run to make it 43-7. That ended the scoring as Gunter got the ball back and ran the clock out.

Gunter finished with 354 yards rushing while Boling was held to 101. Colson ran for 180 yards while Carr ran for 105. Gunter was 7 of 9 on 3rd down conversions.
