Billy Mathis Lands First HC Job Replaces Retiring Weldon Nelms
Head Coach Weldom Nelms of Weatherford announced his retirement, leaving the Kangaroos in search of a new coach. That search didn't last long as they hired Billy Mathis to take over the position. Mathis was most recently the Defensive Coordinator for the State Champion Aledo Bearcats.
Nelms retires as the #34 winningest coach in Texas high school football history with an overall record of 242-145-3.

While at Wimberley, Nelms won a Class 3A Division I Championship in 2005 and a Class 3A Division II title in 2011.
Weldon Nelms Coaching Show Interview
Billy Mathis was a former Bearcat player who played and coached under Aledo ISD Athletic Director Tim Buchanan. When Steve Wood took over the Head Coach position, Mathis was names the Bearcats’ Defensive Coordinator since Steve Wood. This is his first head coaching job.
