Tigers Close Pre-district 49-14 Over Leander
Adversity surrounded the Round Rock Stony Point Tigers heading into the week, as their opening two non-district wins against Killeen and Killeen-Ellison were forced to be vacated, and the players were wanting to make a statement with their matchup against Leander following the ruling. By the game’s end, 240 yards of rushing offense and a defense that allowed just 35 rushing yards, laid down the statement in a resounding 49-14 for Stony Point (1-3) over Leander (0-4).
“It feels good to come out and win this game,” head coach Craig Chessher said. “We faced some adversity, but our guys handled it well. We’re resilient and the guys never got down about it (vacating the wins), and they put on a good performance tonight, following a tough loss last week.”
Stony Point got off to an early start, with a 5 yard rushing touchdown on their opening drive by senior QB Donovan Rybachek, but Leander capitalized on broken coverage on the following drive with a 35 yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7 early. But that would be the closest the game would get. Stony Point scored twice more in the quarter, both scores on the ground by junior RB Tyler Cleveland to push the lead to 21-7 to close the quarter.
The second quarter slowed down the pace of the game, and the only score of the quarter was a 1-yard push on 4th and goal by Rybachek, to push the Tiger lead to 28-7 going into the half.
The second half was controlled once more by the Tigers with Rybachek adding a touchdown pass and a touchdown run, senior QB Zach Rangel added a touchdown pass and sophomore RB Kendall Thomas tallied 96 yards rushing on the night. The Tigers outgained the Lions by 200 yards, with Leander picking up 228 total yards and compared to Stony Point’s 428 total yards. With the run game proving to be the difference with totals of 240 for Stony Point as compared to the 35 yards for Leander. Senior OT Jakob Hall was proud of the offensive line and running backs behind them following the game.
“We put it on them (Leander) pretty good.” Hall said. “We opened some big holes and we put up some big points as a result. The running backs had incredible vision and always do, and were able to find the holes, even when we weren’t able to create the holes for them, they’re just incredible.”
Next week opens the district slate for Stony Point, as they play against longtime rival Round Rock (0-4). Both teams will look to pick up momentum as the real season kicks off for District 13-6A at Dragon Stadium next Friday night at 7 P.M. Leander will have their open week next before resuming play 10/6 at Cedar Park Vista Ridge to open up District 25-6A play.
