Friendswood Mustangs (8-3) vs. Humble Summer Creek Bulldogs (7-3)

The Friendswood  Mustangs and Humble Summer Creek Bulldogs met Friday 11/24/17 at NRG Stadium in the Area Round of the UIL Playoffs. Friendswood won this matchup in week 4 27-19 as they were able to shut down Bulldog superstar quarterback John Holcombe. This time around it appeared to be a contest to see who could commit the most mistakes and still come away with a victory. In the end, Friendswood again held on for the 27-26 win.

Friendswood went 3 & out to start the game. Humble Summer Creek took over and had a good drive. They then went for it on 4th and 1 at the Friendswood 28 but the defense held up and the Mustangs took over. Friendswood took advantage of the turnover on downs and went 71 yards for a score. The final 33 yards came on a pass from freshman quarterback Luke Geden to receiver Austin Alvarez. The Bulldogs then went on a 13 play drive and had the ball inside the Mustang 10 yard line before Friendswood defensive back Reid Nickerson picked the ball off in the end zone. One play later, the first quarter ended with Friendswood leading 7-0.

Summer Creek linebacker Coral Dahl intercepted on the first play of the 2nd quarter and returned it to the Mustang 4 yard line. Three plays later receiver Deon Cormier caught a pass from Holcombe for a score. The extra point was blocked making the score 7-6 in favor of Friendswood. After a Friendswood punt, Summer Creek took over at their own 10. They drove the length of the field and settled for a 23 yard field goal to give them a 9-7 lead with 2:32 left until halftime.

Bulldog defensive back Joseph Tucker got an interception on the next Friendswood drive and returned it to the Mustange 22 yard line with 1:48 left. The Bulldogs scored from the 8 yard line with another pass from Holcombe to Cormier. That made the score 16-7 with 46 seconds left before the break. Friendswood was able to get on the board before half when Geden hit receiver Ben Redding for a 68 yard pass. That made the score 16-14 with 22 seconds left and that was how the half ended.

The teams combined for 450 yards of total offense with 333 of that coming in the air.

Summer Creek opened the 2nd half with a 79 yard drive that ended with a short run by Holcombe for a touchdown. The extra point made the score 23-14. Friendswood had to punt and Summer Creek got a big punt return to the Mustang 37. The Mustang defense held though on a 4th down play at the 21. On the first play, Bulldog defensive back Jalen Mayes intercepted the ball. The quarter ended with Summer Creek driving and a 23-14 lead.

The Mustang defense held again. The offense got it rolling again when Geden hit Koleman Bell for a long pass but he fumbled around the Summer Creek 39. The ball was picked up Nick Swaney who took it the rest of the way for score. All total it was 65 yards. That brought the score to 23-21. The Bulldogs took over and went on a long drive and this time converted on a 4th down play inside the Mustang 20. The defense held again and Summer Creek had to settle for a 22 yard field goal to make the score 26-21 Summer Creek with 4:32 left in the game.

The Mustangs took over and scored when Redding (pictured) took a pass 49 yards for the touchdown. The 2 point conversion was no good and Friendswood led 27-26 with 3:25 left in the game. After a penalty on the kickoff, the Bulldogs took over from their own 8 yard line. Summer Creek drove to the Mustang 7 yard line and lined up for a 24 yard field goal with 7 seconds. left. The snap was high and the kick was never attempted. Friendswood took over and ran the clock out. Mustangs won 27-26 in a wild one.

The teams combined for 908 yards of total offense with 676 of that coming in the air.

Friendswood will take on the winner of Cypress Fairbanks (10-0) and Houston Strake Jesuit (8-2) game next week in the Regionals.
