Mart Outlasts Hamlin to Earn Three-peat

In a Battle of Young Yeams, the experience of Mart Wins the Day

The Mart Panthers (13-3) defeated the Hamlin Pied Pipers (12-3) 25-20 to win the Class 2A Division II State Championship. The game looked like it was going to be a high scoring one after Hamlin led 14-12 after 1 quarter. The defenses took over from there and Mart took control of the game and held on for the win. This gave Mart their 3rd consecutive state title. This game was Marts 8th State Championship in 12 title games. They have a championship record 7-4-1. Mart now #2 in all-time state championship appearances This was Hamlin's 1st title game.

Hamlin looked very impressive on their first possession as they moved down the field. Running back Jevon Williams (1,451 yards rushing 11.4 ypc 31 catches 596 yards 37 total touchdowns) ran it in from 10 yards out to give them a 7-0 lead. Mart responded with a 79 yard drive when running back Roddrell Freeman (1,970 yards rushing 11.1 ypc 36 touchdowns) ran it in from 59 yards out. Hamlin TE/DL Austin Lozano blocked the extra point to make the score 7-6. Hamlin turned it around and got a 69 yard run by Williams for the score to make it 14-6. Mart made it deep into Hamlin territory. Freeman was pushed out of bounds on a close play at the 1 yard line and turned the ball over on downs. Hamlin finished the quarter with 167 yards of offense while Mart had 152.

Hamlin was stopped for the first time in the game on their first drive of the 2nd quarter. Freeman scored on Mart's first possession of the 2nd quarter with a 14 yard run. They went for 2 but the play was stuffed and Hamlin still led 14-12. The Pipers moved into Mart territory before their pass was picked off by defensive back Keishawn Clater. Freeman turned the turnover into points with his 3rd touchdown run of the day. Marts 2 point conversion play was stuffed and Hamlin led 18-12. The Pied Pipers used their passing game to move into Mart territory right before the half ended but a fumble ended the drive. The teams had combined for 509 yards of total offense.

In the 3rd quarter, the defenses dominated. The teams went back and forth until Mart defensive back Klyderion Campbell intercepted a pass and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good and Mart led 25-14. There was only 97 yards of total offense in the 3rd quarter.

The Pied Pipers had a great drive in the 4th using their passing game but they fumbled at the Mart 8 yard line that was recovered by the Panthers Freeman. Mart went 3 and out and after a short punt, the Pied Pipers got the ball at the Mart 23. They got a 9 yard pass to Lozano on a 4th & 9. The 2 point conversion was no good and Mart led 25-20 with 2:22 left in the game. The onside kick attempt was recovered by Marts Kyler Martin and the Panthers ran out the clock.
