Bulldog Defense Shines
Last week, the Smithville Tigers opened their brand-new Tiger Stadium with a 28-7 win over Columbia. This week, the Tigers welcomed perennial power Yoakum to Tiger Stadium. The Bulldogs were also 1-0 following a 41-17 win over Palacios last week.
Using a combination of staunch defense and potent running attack, the Bulldogs were able to hold the Tigers in check and secure a 21-7 win. In the first half, miscues and penalties prevented both teams from establishing any sustained momentum. Early in the first quarter, Bulldog defensive lineman Kolson Jacobs recovered a fumble at
the Yoakum 48-yard line. On the resulting offensive drive, quarterback Blake Gordon scored the half’s only touchdown on a one-yard keeper. Shortly before halftime, Smithville defensive back Armante Chase ended a promising Yoakum drive with an interception.
In the third quarter, running back Deandre Enoch-Johnson extended the Yoakum lead to 14-0 with a four-yard touchdown run. Early in the fourth quarter, Johnson found the end zone again on a one-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 21-0. The ensuing kickoff breathed new life into the Tigers when receiver Terrell Henderson returned the ball to the Yoakum five-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Blake Segel put the Tigers on the board with a three-yard keeper. Despite giving up the score, the Bulldog defense stiffened and shut down the Tiger offense for the rest of the game. The Bulldogs also ran the ball methodically to consume clock and finish with a victory.
With the win, Yoakum improves to 2-0. Next week, the Bulldogs will return home to face Cuero. The Gobblers are 0-2 following a 33-14 loss to Wimberley. Smithville, meanwhile, falls to 1-1. Next week, the Tigers will travel to face Lago Vista. The Vikings are 1-0 following a 22-7 win over Teague.
