Patriots miss late field goal to seal fifth-straight win in series for Cubs
Not all rivalries are based on proximity. The Georgetown East View Patriots and Brenham Cubs are separated by about 80 miles. However, in 2018, UIL realignment put the schools together in District 13-5A DII. Entering Friday night's contest, the Patriots and Cubs had met a total of four times. Prior to being put in the same district, the Cubs and Patriots had met in the 2013 UIL 5A playoffs.
Despite the Cubs holding a 4-0 all-time lead, the series has been extremely competitive. The Cubs' average margin of victory was three points, and their largest margin of victory was five points. In keeping with the trend, Friday night's contest marked yet another thrilling chapter in the series as Brenham staved off a late East View rally for a 13-10 win.
In the first half, neither offense was able to generate much of anything. The Patriots managed a meager 47 yards of total offense while the Cubs only managed 73. East View got on the board first when Brenham snapped the ball over punter Grant Mayfield's head in the first quarter and forced Mayfield to fall on the ball in the end zone for a safety. In the 2nd quarter, Brenham defensive back Adan Villatoro got an interception; and the Cubs took advantage of the turnover courtesy of kicker Brant Bender's 29-yard field goal.
Shortly before halftime, Brenham linebacker Jermain Johnson returned a line-drive punt to the East View seven-yard line. Shortly thereafter, Brenham running back Ricky Brown scored on a six-yard touchdown run to give the Cubs a 10-2 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the offensive woes continued. Midway through the third quarter, the Cubs had the ball first-and-goal from the Patriot eight-yard line; but Patriot defender Seth Kirklin recovered quarterback Steven Stackhouse’s fumble at the East View 11-yard line. The Patriot offense, however, was not able to convert the turnover into points. On the final play of the third quarter, East View running back Jae’lin Edmonson found the end zone on a 66-yard catch; and the Patriots tied the game after successfully completing the two-point conversion.
In the fourth quarter, Brenham linebacker Matthew Proeung recovered a fumble at the East View 34-yard line. The Cubs took advantage of the turnover when Bender netted a 38-yard field goal. With just over 30 seconds left in the game and Brenham leading 13-10, East View kicker Patrick Maxwell, playing in his first-ever Texas high school football game, kicked a 54-yard field goal attempt which fell just short of the crossbar to seal a fifth-consecutive win for the Cubs.
After the game, Brenham Head Coach Eliot Allen acknowledged that his team had plenty upon which to improve, especially in terms of penalties, mental mistakes, and offensive execution. He was, however, also complimentary of his team and praised them for being able to win an incredibly close contest. With the win, Brenham improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in district. Next week, the Cubs will travel to Bastrop to face the Bastrop Bears (0-5, 0-2.)
For his part, East View Head Coach Jerod Fikac was complimentary of his team’s performance. He acknowledged that his team had areas upon which to improve but also lauded his team’s effort and perseverance throughout the game. The Patriots fall to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in district. Next week, the Patriots will host the Bastrop Cedar Creek Eagles (1-4, 1-1.)
