Vandegrift Leaves No Doubt
The Austin Vandegrift Vipers are a young team that is starting to find their stride. After winning the 6A-D2 State Championship last year, the Vipers started this season having to replace three starters on offense and seven starters on defense. Vandegrift took it on the chin falling in their opener to Dripping Springs 41-14, but the Vipers got back on track last week with a 35-14 win over Cedar Park. On Friday night, the Vipers opened district play with a 24-0 shutout of the Round Rock Stony Point Tigers.
“It is a young team. We’ve got to figure things out, and we’re starting to do that. You can see the results. We’re starting to get better,” Vandegrift Head Coach Drew Sanders said after Friday’s win. The Vipers jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Kicker Wiley Olson netted a 36-yard field goal, and running back Justin Moore scored a 19-yard touchdown on the Vipers’ first two possessions. Vandegrift started both possessions in Stony Point territory.
In the second quarter, Stony Point’s defense kept the Tigers in the game. Vandegrift had three drives in Stony Point territory, but the Tiger defense forced an interception, a fumble, and a turnover on downs. In addition, the Tigers made it difficult for the Vipers to establish the run. “Their strength is in their 4-3 front,” Sanders said. The Tigers’ offense, however, failed to capitalize on the opportunities.
In the second half, the Vipers took control. Vandegrift punted on the opening drive, but the Vipers pinned the Tigers back at the Tigers’ two-yard line. Stony Point only gained seven yards on that drive, and a bad punt gave Vandegrift the ball at the Tigers’ 21-yard line. Three plays later, running back Sam Brown extended Vandegrift’s lead with a three-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Miles Teodecki scored on a seven-yard scramble in the fourth quarter.
Next week, Stony Point will host Leander Vista Ridge on Thursday, 09/18, at Kelly Reeves Stadium in Round Rock.
Vandegrift has a bye week and will then travel to Gupton Stadium to face Vista Ridge.
