Pflugerville Weiss Wins Third Straight Over Pflugerville Hendrickson
Wolves overcome slow start to race past Hawks
First-year Weiss Head Coach Malcolm Hill is forging a resilient team. On Friday night, the Wolves were down 14-0 against their PfISD rivals, the Pflugerville Hendrickson Hawks, early in the second quarter. The Wolves’ defense struggled to contain the Hawks’ offense, and quarterback Jackson Schad threw an interception on the Wolves’ opening drive.
In the second quarter, however, the Wolves found their stride and never looked back. The Wolves scored 41 consecutive points over the next three quarters for a 41-21 win. “You never lost focus,” Hill told his team after the game. “You never crumbled. You never folded.”
Despite being in his first year of coaching at Weiss, Hill was well aware of the magnitude of the rivalry. “These kids grow up together. Their families break bread together,” Hill said. Even Hill’s daughter got into the spirit after the game telling her dad that they were going to have Hawk eggs for breakfast.
Hendrickson came out swinging early. Quarterback Pete Vallejo Jr scored the Hawks’ first two touchdowns using his feet while Weiss struggled to move the ball. The Wolves’ defense also had a difficult time containing receiver Romelo Boykin.
After “weathering the storm” as Coach Hill put it, Weiss started punching back. Shad connected with receiver Tre Moore on two touchdown passes to tie the game at 14-14. Following the second touchdown, the Weiss defense stepped up; and defensive back Jorian Guinn ended Hendrickson’s drive with an interception. A Hendrickson pass interference penalty in the end zone gave Weiss an untimed down before the half, and Schad put Weiss ahead with a two-yard keeper.
In the third quarter, Weiss put the game out of reach. Using the momentum from the second quarter, Schad threw for two more touchdown passes. The first score was a 25-yard touchdown pass to Schad’s brother Dallas Schad, and the second score was a six-yard pass to running back Jayon Alexander. The Hawks then fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Alexander punched the ball in from three yards out shortly thereafter.
Late in the fourth quarter, Hendrickson receiver Brayden Mueller broke free for a 75-yard touchdown catch.
Next week, Weiss (3-1, 2-1) will host Bastrop Cedar Creek (0-4, 0-2.)
Hendrickson (3-2,2-1), meanwhile, will travel to face the College Station Cougars (1-4, 1-2.)
