Wolves defense shines in win over Rattlers
Last week, the Pflugerville Weiss Wolves’ offense was on full display in their 56-28 win over Round Rock McNeil. On Thursday night against the San Marcos Rattlers, the Wolves’ defense led the charge. The Wolves forced three interceptions including defensive back Jorian Guinn’s interception late in the fourth quarter which sealed the Wolves’ 25-15 win. The defense also wreaked havoc in the backfield and made several key pass breakups.
Offensively, the talented receiver tandem of junior Tre Moore and sophomore Jordan Anderson led the way for Weiss. Anderson had over 90 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Anderson’s first touchdown came on a wild play. As tight end Trason Armstrong was being tackled, Armstrong pitched the ball to Anderson; and Anderson ran the ball in for the score. Tre Moore scored his team’s second touchdown on a 12-yard catch. Kicker Sabian Munoz also netted two field goals for the Wolves.
For San Marcos, the Rattlers were looking to build off the momentum of their 40-21 win over Hutto in week one. The win was the Rattlers’ first win in two seasons. Unfortunately for San Marcos, the Rattlers were snake-bitten by penalties and miscues throughout the game. The Rattlers were even flagged on the opening kickoff for delay of game. Quarterback Buck Steyn had to deal with low snaps throughout the game. One of those snaps led to a fumble which Weiss recovered deep in Rattler territory.
As with Weiss, the defense was San Marcos’s strength. After the aforementioned fumble, the Rattlers forced the Wolves to turn the ball over on downs. While the defense kept the Rattlers in the game, the Rattlers’ offense could not take advantage.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Rattlers began to find some momentum, After Jordan Anderson’s second touchdown put Weiss ahead 22-8, Steyn connected with receiver Hank Harris on a 32-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing Weiss drive, Harris made a big defensive play. With the Wolves driving into Rattler territory, Harris made an interception at the San Marcos eight-yard line. The Rattlers then drove into Weiss territory, but Guinn made the game-sealing interception.
After the game, Weiss head coach Malcolm Hill praised his defense for putting the team on their backs. “When we needed them, the defense stepped up,” Hill said. Hill also praised his team maintaining calm even when facing adversity. “We’re still up and down, but our guys are finding peace and staying in the middle.”
Next week, the Wolves will travel to College Station to open district play against the A&M Consolidated Tigers.
