Pflugerville Weiss Dominates Buda Hays
Pflugerville Weiss quarterback Jaxon Schad is only a sophomore, but he is leading his team like a senior. “He’s willing to learn,” Head Coach Malcolm Hill said of Schad’s success, “He is very comfortable accepting constructive criticism…It sets the tone for our team.” Schad accounted for all seven of Weiss’s touchdowns Friday night in the Wolves’ 50-8 rout of the Buda Hays Hawks. Four of those touchdowns were through the air, and two were scored on the ground.
Schad was not the only star for Weiss offensively. Weiss also had standout performances from junior wide receiver Tre Moore and sophomore wide receiver Jordan Ibn Anderson-El. Moore caught two touchdown passes of 58 and 42 yards. Anderson-El had three touchdown catches of 40, 25, and 45 yards.
Defensively, the Wolves kept the Hawks out of the end zone for the entire game. The Wolves forced four turnovers including two fumbles and two interceptions.
For the Hawks, all of their points came from special teams. Kicker Wyatt Deleon netted field goals of 37 and 27 yards, and the Hawks ran back a blocked extra point after Weiss’s second touchdown. The blocked extra-point was Hays’s second of the night. Hindering the Hawks’ cause was the absence of starting quarterback Tacoma Ames. Ames missed the game due to a knee injury.
Despite the dominant margin of victory, Coach Hill stressed to his players that they still had a lot to improve. “Let’s find some new mistakes to make,” Coach Hill said. In the first half, the Wolves struggled to execute at times, especially on offense. Coach Hill attributed that partly to Hays throwing some defensive looks that his team did not see on film.
The Wolves were also without starting running back Jayon Alexander and had to employ running back by committee. Hill also said that his players were reacting to the game instead of taking control of the game. Even with the struggles, the Wolves led 18-8 at halftime. The Wolves found their stride in the second half and cruised to a win.
With the win, Weiss improves to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in district. The Wolves are tied for second with A&M Consolidated in a tight race for the District 12-5A D1 crown. Consol has already defeated Weiss earlier in the year. Austin Anderson is currently in first place at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in district, and College Station is fourth at 3-4 overall and 3-2 in district. Next week, Weiss returns home to the Pfield to host Lockhart (1-5, 1-3) on Thursday, October 16.
Despite the loss, Hays still remains in contention for at least a playoff berth at 4-2 overall and 2-2 in district. Next week, the Hawks travel to face College Station in a critical district showdown.
