Raiders stave off late Patriot rally to keep playoff hopes alive
The Leander Rouse Raiders kept their postseason hopes alive Friday night with a 24-21 win over the Georgetown East View Patriots. The Raiders were in control early leading 21-0 in the second quarter. However, the Patriots found their stride in the second half and pulled within three points before falling short. The win keeps Rouse alive in the playoff race, but the Raiders will need some help to clinch a berth.
Offensively, Rouse quarterback London Morgan and running back Anthony Reyes put the team on their backs. Morgan threw for 172 yards and had one passing and one rushing touchdown. Reyes rushed 117 yards and also caught a 43-yard touchdown pass. Running back Aubryn Davis also scored a one-yard touchdown for the Raiders, and kicker Matheus Zocca netted a 34-yard field goal. Defensively, the Raiders were able to contain East View’s dynamic quarterback Cormyc Guerrero.
While Rouse controlled most of the first half, East View was able to find a spark on the final drive of the second quarter. After driving deep into Rouse territory, East View receiver Allen Blaylock made a spectacular one-handed grab at the Raiders’ five-yard line. On the next play, Guerrero scored on a five-yard run as the half expired.
On the Patriots’ second drive in the second half, receiver Sam Williams broke free for an 83-yard touchdown catch to pull East View within seven. The defense forced Rouse to punt on the ensuing drive, but disaster struck for East View during the punt. Deep in his own territory, the East View return man misjudged the punt and fumbled the return. Rouse then recovered the ball at the East View nine-yard line.
Despite the setback, the Patriots’ defense stiffened and forced the Raiders to settle for a field goal. Following the field goal, East View running back Jayvion Clayter scored a 32-yard touchdown run which brought the Patriots within three points.
On the ensuing drive, East View’s defense handed the offense a golden opportunity. Rouse drove the ball to the East View 28-yard line, but Aquavious Marbury’s sack and an intentional grounding pushed the Raiders all the way back to their own 37-yard line. The resulting punt set up East View at their own 42-yard line with a chance to take the lead. However, the drive stalled, and East View was forced to punt before Rouse ran out the clock.
With the win, Rouse improves to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in District 8-5A D2. The Raiders are tied with Lake Belton (4-5, 3-3), but the Broncos hold the tie breaker with a head-to-head win. Next week, the Raiders will face Leander Glenn (1-8, 1-5.) If the Raiders win, they will need Lake Belton to lose to Killeen Chaparral (2-7, 0-6) to earn a berth.
East View, meanwhile, falls to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in district. Next week, the Patriots will travel to Bible Stadium to face the Leander Lions (3-6, 2-4.) A win guarantees the Patriots a playoff berth. If the Patriots lose and Rouse and Lake Belton win, the teams will enter a three-way tie for the final spot.
