"We came with six and we left with seven. 6 - 7." -Stephenville Head Coach Sterling Doty
The Stephenville Yellowjackets only needed ten points to win their school's seventh state championship. The Yellowjackets beat the Kilgore Bulldogs 10-0 in the 4A-D1 Championship Friday afternoon in Arlington.
Coming into the game, the Yellowjackets were battle tested. In the regular season, the Yellowjackets faced a gauntlet that included teams such as Midlothian Heritage, Waco La Vega, Wylie, and Ruston(LA.) In the playoffs, Stephenville faced daunting tests in the quarterfinals against West Plains and in the semi-finals against defending 4A-D2 champion Celina.
That experienced proved invaluable for their matchup against Kilgore. The Bulldogs had only one loss coming into the game, and that came against 4A stalwart Carthage in the first game of the season. Of particular focus for Stephenville was the Bulldogs' speed on offense. Led by defensive MVP Hudson Butchee, the Yellow jackets disrupted the Bulldogs throughout the game. Stephenville forced five turnovers including four interceptions and one fumble recovery. The Yellowjackets also racked up seven tackles for loss and two sacks.
Neither team scored in the first half for the first time in a state championship game since 2004. On the opening drive of the second half, however, Stephenville finally found the end zone. Quarterback Trot Jordan connected with receiver Adan Jergins for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Brighton DeVivo also netted a 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. For Stephenville Head Coach Sterling Doty, this year's championship is his second in charge of the Yellowjackets.
