Twelve Miles and Twenty-Two Seconds: Edna Outlasts Industrial 42-35

Twelve miles separate Edna High School from Industrial High School in Vanderbilt. On Friday night those twelve miles were the only thing separating these two football teams, and for about forty-seven minutes the scoreboard couldn't tell them apart either.

Edna won it 42-35. The Cowboys scored fourteen points in the last twenty-two seconds of game clock to do it.

The county stood together first

Before anybody kicked anything, both teams walked to midfield and lined up shoulder to shoulder, every player carrying an American flag in each hand, while "Proud to Be an American" played over the speakers. Then the anthem. Then a moment of silence for the twenty-fifth anniversary of September 11.

Then both teams came back out to midfield, this time with first responders from Jackson County and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Two schools twelve miles apart, one county, one night. That is how you do it.

Edna kept scoring on plays that should have been dead

Industrial won the toss, deferred, and took the wind. Zain Koenig got the Cobras on the board with a short field goal after the drive stalled at the eight, and that field goal turned out to be the last thing all night that happened slowly.

Edna answered on a play that had no business working. Maverick Robertson took a pitch, caught it behind the line of scrimmage, and went sixty-four yards.

That became the pattern. Get hit at or near the line, break it, disappear. Malik Tilmon did it in the second quarter when he took a pitch left, found absolutely nothing, cut all the way back across the field to the right and outran everybody. Robertson did it again eighteen seconds of game clock later, wrapped up in his own backfield by Industrial's Jayden Nylin before breaking loose and taking it the distance.

Three Edna touchdowns, three plays where a defender had a hand on the ball carrier before he ever got going.

Industrial never blinked

The Cobras did not have that kind of magic available, so they went and earned theirs the hard way, drive by drive, and they kept earning them.

Wyatt Kurtz scored from the six on a pitch out by Tyler Barnett, and Industrial went for two and got it to tie the game at fourteen. After Edna went back up, the Cobras put together the grinding two-minute drive of the half, converting a fourth and two with an Easton Larew run up the gut and finishing it when Larew took a Barnett pass and hurdled an Edna defender into the end zone with fifty-nine seconds left. Twenty-one all at the break. Nobody sat down.

Industrial opened the third quarter with a Kurtz return to the 40 and then went sixty yards on the very next snap, Larew straight up the middle, for their first lead of the night at 28-21.

Edna tied it back up in six plays.

Then the Cobras found the throw of the game. Barnett got flushed, reset, and put one on Bryce Sykes in coverage. Sykes took it away and went forty-nine yards. 35-28 with 6:54 left in the third, and Industrial had control of a football game they were not supposed to be in.

Sykes nearly ended it a possession later. He came down with a deep ball on the left side for what looked like the interception that closes the door. A flag hit the turf. Then an official picked the flag up and waved it off, and Cobras head coach Matthew Luddeke let the entire stadium know how he felt about that.

Eighty-two seconds

Industrial lost Larew to a limp in the fourth after a scuffle in the pile drew a personal foul on the Cobras and backed them up to first and twenty-five. Barnett got sacked on the series and Koenig punted it away.

Edna drove to the Industrial 37 and faced fourth and five. Coach Jamie Dixon went for it. Kannon Taylor picked off Adrian Boston, and that should have been the ballgame.

It wasn't. Industrial drove it right back, Jayden Nylin breaking roughly ten tackles on one carry to the Edna 49, then Kurtz up the middle again and again while the Cobra side of the stadium hollered at the coaches to keep running it until somebody stopped it. Nobody stopped it. A bobbled snap did. On fourth down from the 33 a throw to Joey Smith came up short and bounced off a Cowboy defender's hands.

Turnover on downs, 2:39 to go, Edna ball on its own 33, down seven. What happened next took eighty-two seconds.

The Cowboys moved to the Industrial 30 and faced fourth and two with 1:22 left and one timeout. Robertson got the two yards off left tackle. On the next snap Edna quick-snapped a throw to the left corner of the end zone and Aidan Lugo came down with it for twenty-five yards and the touchdown.

Dixon took the extra point and a likely overtime instead of going for two. The Industrial sideline was screaming that the defensive line was lined up offsides, and they were right, but the kick went through and Edna kept the points. Tied at 35 with 1:02 showing.

Then the kickoff. Angel Gaytan bounced it along the ground, an Industrial returner picked it up at the 18 and got stripped. For a second it looked like a Cobra had fallen on it. When the pile came apart, an Edna Cowboy had the football on the Industrial 22 with fifty seconds left.

One play later, Jayron Barnes, a sophomore who lines up at receiver and sometimes comes in to run wildcat, rolled right and dropped one into the end zone for Lugo again. 42-35 with forty seconds to play.

Industrial got one more crack from its own 28 with thirty-four seconds and no timeouts. A deep heave fell incomplete with two seconds showing. The last play was a hook and ladder, and for a second it looked like it might actually work before Ashton Mendoza got knocked out of bounds at the Edna 45.

Both coaches walked off proud

Jamie Dixon has been coaching long enough to appreciate a game like that and still not enjoy living through it.

"It was a heck of a ballgame. Both teams laid it out on the line," Dixon said. Then he laughed. "Heck of a game. Both sides came to play."

Asked about a second half where his team gave up the lead and then had to score twice in the last minute to win, Dixon kept it simple.

"They got a lot of fight in them, resiliency, and they stuck with it. I'm proud of them for doing that."

The losing coach was not mourning

Before kickoff, Matthew Luddeke had said the night would come down to which Industrial team showed up. The right one did, and he knew it.

"Each week our goal is to continue getting better," Luddeke said afterward. "We've had a couple of close ones these last games, and you want that to fall your way. So our message to our kids is we just got to do the little things right, and then those big moments will happen for us."

He was not interested in talking about the officiating, the fumbled kickoff, or the two touchdowns his defense gave up in the last twenty-two seconds.

"I'm so proud of their effort tonight. I thought our kids fought hard. I thought we gave ourselves a chance to win. We just got to put the nail in the coffin next time."

Then: "I look forward to getting back to work and going and getting our first win next week."

That is a man who watched his 0-2 football team go toe to toe for forty-eight minutes with a program that won ten games last year, and walked off thinking about next Friday.

What it means

Edna is 2-1. Industrial is 0-3, and that record tells you almost nothing about what that team did on Friday night.

Lugo finished with the two touchdowns that decided it. Kurtz and Larew carried Industrial all night. Sykes made the play of the game and very nearly made the other one.

This is the kind of game where you hate for anybody to lose. Twelve miles apart, same county, same Friday night, and forty-eight minutes where neither one of them would go away.
