Somebody Forgot to Tell Allen and North Crowley It's Only Week 2
Allen has played Duncanville and DeSoto in back-to-back weeks and won by a combined 76-13. North Crowley shut out Aledo, then handed Southlake Carroll its worst loss since 2018. That is four state powers in fourteen days, and none of the four made it competitive.
Two weeks into 2026, the top of Texas already looks different than it did in August.
Allen is making the loudest argument in the state
The Eagles opened with a 26-7 win over Duncanville, last year's 6A Division I runner-up. Then they buried DeSoto 50-6 at Eagle Stadium. Sophomore quarterback Ty Snell threw four touchdown passes, three of them to sophomore Zach Williams, and Allen led 28-0 at the half before pulling starters in the fourth.
What should get your attention is the defense. Against Duncanville, Allen recorded eight sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Against DeSoto, senior defensive back Jeremiah Storey picked off two passes and the defense forced a safety. Allen is not winning shootouts. Allen is taking the ball away from good offenses.
The Eagles go to Southlake Carroll on Friday. A third straight win over a marquee DFW program and the conversation stops being about whether Allen is good.
North Crowley might be the best team nobody was picking
DeMarcus Harris took over a program that was already loaded. That is usually a story about not breaking anything. This is not that story.
North Crowley held Aledo to negative-10 rushing yards on 40 carries in a 26-0 opener, then beat Southlake Carroll 40-10. G'Yrell Smith, a North Texas pledge, scored four touchdowns on eleven carries. The Panthers forced turnovers on back-to-back Carroll red zone trips in the second half and held the Dragons to three points after halftime despite Carroll crossing midfield six times.
The play Harris pointed to afterward was a fourth-and-goal stop before the break. He told his team in the huddle that those are the plays you get remembered for. Combined score through two weeks against Aledo and Carroll: 66-10.
DeSoto is 0-2 and the schedule is not letting up
The defending 6A Division II champion dropped to 5A Division I in the UIL's realignment and then built a non-district schedule that would test a college team. It has not gone well. DeSoto lost 38-14 to St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida, a game that turned into a national story when three of four captains declined the pregame handshake. Then came Allen.
Now they get Duncanville at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday. Duncanville is coming off a 34-7 win over Cedar Hill.
I want to be careful here, because this is the part everyone gets wrong. Three state titles in four years does not evaporate in fourteen days. Claude Mathis has a roster that can still win a lot of football games. But an 0-2 start against a rival, in a stadium that big, is the kind of week that tells you what a program is actually built on. That is a better story than any box score.
What else mattered around the state
Beyond the headliners, a few results worth keeping on your board:
- Ridge Point 28, Shadow Creek 7. The Panthers are 2-0 and belong in the statewide conversation.
- Carthage 67, Pine Tree 36. Carthage is 2-0 and threatening to make the 4A title race boring again.
- Port Neches-Groves 50, Beaumont West Brook 19. Big special teams plays and a turnover-free home debut from quarterback Jake Ashworth after an opening loss.
- Port Arthur Memorial 47, Bellaire 7. The Titans are 2-0 coming off a state semifinal season.
- Brennan 63, Reagan 0. One of the more startling San Antonio scores of the weekend.
- Greenwood 25, Lubbock-Cooper 15. A West Texas team worth tracking, now 2-0 after a road rally.
- Cameron Yoe 62, Whitney 61. The small classifications delivered the wildest finish of the week, as usual.
- Atascocita 38, Steele 23. A quality bounce-back win over a San Antonio power.
Randle deserves its own line. After beating South Oak Cliff 20-14 in Week 1, the Lions won 3-0 over Spring Westfield. Nobody is putting that on a highlight reel. But championship teams have to win a few games where the offense never shows up, and Randle is 2-0 against two real programs.
Weather was a factor in South Texas. Lightning disrupted several Laredo-area games and cancelled St. Augustine's outright, while Nixon rebounded from an opening loss to beat Cigarroa 42-7.
Circle these for Week 3
North Shore vs. South Oak Cliff, Saturday at the Cotton Bowl. This is the game of the week in Texas. The defending 6A Division I champ against the defending 5A Division II champ. North Shore is 2-0 after opening 35-0 over Lancaster and then going to Lafayette and beating 28-time Louisiana champion John Curtis 27-17, scoring twice in the fourth. South Oak Cliff had Week 2 off after the Randle loss.
Duncanville vs. DeSoto, Saturday at the Cotton Bowl, 11 a.m. The first half of the Roland Parrish Classic. Rivalry plus desperation plus two championship coaching staffs.
Allen at Southlake Carroll, Friday. Carroll went from a 27-point comeback over Jenks to a 30-point loss to North Crowley in eight days. Which one was real?
North Crowley vs. Summer Creek, Friday. A Houston-area test after two DFW statements.
Boerne at Davenport, Friday. Don't let the 6A games eat the whole broadcast. Boerne has scored 75 points in two games and Davenport just put 58 on Leander Glenn.
Also worth a mention on air: Smithson Valley-McCallum, Frisco Lone Star-Cedar Hill, and PN-G at Fort Bend Crawford.
The bottom line
Week 1 asked whether Allen and North Crowley were for real. Week 2 answered it. Week 3 asks whether anybody in Texas can slow them down, whether DeSoto can stop the bleeding, and which defending champion walks out of the Cotton Bowl on Saturday with the strongest claim to being the team to beat.
