Chaparrals Race Past Raiders for District Title
Nothing could stand between the Austin Westlake Chaparrals and their sixth district title in the last seven years. Not the red-hot Round Rock Cedar Ridge Raiders. Not even a blown transformer that knocked out power at Chaparral Stadium and forced the game to be suspended Friday night and completed Saturday afternoon.
Before the outage, Westlake had already built a 20-7 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the second quarter. The lights went out just before the extra point, and play resumed from that spot Saturday afternoon. Unfazed by the disruption, the Chaps raced past the Raiders for a 56-21 victory and the District 25-6A title.
At 8-0, Cedar Ridge was off to its best start since 2016. The Raiders entered the game 4-0 in district play, highlighted by a dramatic 35-34 victory over Lake Travis three weeks earlier. Riding that momentum, Cedar Ridge came to Chaparral Stadium with its sights set on the district crown.
Westlake quickly changed those plans.
The game actually started well for the Raiders. On the Chaparrals' opening drive, defensive back Trent Bell intercepted a pass from quarterback Patton Jones. Cedar Ridge then capitalized on the turnover when quarterback Dylan Snoga connected with receiver Jace Allen for a 16-yard touchdown and an early lead.
From that point on, however, Westlake took complete control. The Chaparrals' defense adjusted to Cedar Ridge's offensive attack and shut it down. The Raiders struggled to establish the run throughout the night, while Westlake reeled off 35 unanswered points before Cedar Ridge found the end zone again.
Freshman running back CJ Jones continued his breakout season with three rushing touchdowns. Chase Brodhead, coming off his standout performance against Lake Travis, added a score of his own, while Isaiah Mills also found the end zone. Through the air, Rhett Jones and Nash Chapman each hauled in touchdown receptions. Even the defense got on the scoreboard when defensive back Rhett Henry recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.
Jace Allen and Zaccai Williams each scored touchdowns for Cedar Ridge in the second half.
Next week, Westlake (8-1, 5-0) will travel to Dragon Stadium in Round Rock to face the Round Rock Stony Point Tigers (3-6, 2-3.)
Cedar Ridge (8-1, 4-1) will return home to Kelly Reeves Stadium in Round Rock to host the Round Rock Dragons (6-3, 3-2.)
