The Austin Westlake Chaparrals had Friday night's showdown with Lake Travis circled on their calendars for months. Last season, the Cavaliers spoiled Westlake's homecoming and Drew Brees' jersey retirement ceremony with a commanding 31-10 victory.
On Friday, the Chaparrals got their revenge.
In front of a sellout crowd of more than 10,000 fans at Lake Travis' opulent new stadium, Westlake turned the tables with a convincing 38-17 win over the Cavaliers. The win sets up a de facto district title game next week between the Chaps and the undefeated Round Rock Cedar Ridge Raiders.
For the Chaps, the result came as no surprise.
"It's what we expected to do," Head Coach Tony Salazar said.
Salazar said that his team has been preparing for big moments like this all season.
Defense and a strong run game were the keys to the Chaps' victory. Westlake scored all five of its touchdowns on the ground. Standout freshman running back CJ Jones rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Chase Brodhead had a breakout performance rushing for 43 yards and two touchdowns. Jones himself ran for 90 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, Westlake tallied three tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. The defense also got pressure on Lake Travis quarterback Jason Carter with six hurries.
Lake Travis actually drew first blood in Friday's contest. On the Cavaliers' opening drive, Carter connected with receiver Gray Garrick for a 53-yard touchdown pass. Coach Salazar credited the Cavaliers with calling multiple plays Westlake had not seen and catching the Chaps off guard.
Despite giving up the quick score, Westlake quickly settled into the game and got the next three scores. CJ Jones tied the game with a 27-yard touchdown run and then put Westlake ahead punching the ball in from four yards out. After the defense recovered Jason Carter's fumble on the ensuing drive, Patton Jones scored on an eight-yard scramble.
Lake Travis was able to stop the bleeding on their next drive when kicker Hendrix Bryant netted a 22-yard field goal. Westlake, however, responded with a 36-yard field goal by Anton Kopp before halftime.
If there was any doubt about which side had the momentum, it disappeared on Westlake's first possession of the second half. After driving to the Lake Travis 24-yard line, the Chaparrals caught a break. Patton Jones fumbled, but Chase Brodhead recovered the loose ball and sprinted 30 yards to the end zone.
Midway through the fourth quarter, running back Henry Hopping pulled Lake Travis back to within 14 with a four-yard touchdown run, but Chase Brodhead sealed the game for Westlake with a 14-yard touchdown.
Next week, Westlake (7-1, 4-0) will host their massive contest against Round Rock Cedar Ridge on Friday, October 30, at 7:00pm.
Lake Travis (3-3-1, 2-2) will head to Dragon Stadium in Round Rock to face the Round Rock Dragons (6-2, 3-1) on Friday, October 30, at 7:00pm.
