Round Rock Takes Down Dripping Springs

Dragons get major non-district victory over Tigers

After the first two weeks of the season, the Round Rock Dragons felt frustrated. The Dragons were 1-1 following an opening week 42-28 loss to Pflugerville Weiss and a 49-37 victory last week over Temple. As Head Coach Cody Moore put it, "We had a bad taste in our mouth. We were playing okay but not as well as we were expecting." On Friday night, the Dragons faced another challenging non-district test against the Dripping Springs Tigers.

The Tigers entered the game at 1-0 following last week's 42-7 win over San Antonio Harlan. Dripping Springs' opening game against Lake Travis was cancelled following the death of Lake Travis offensive lineman Odin Hensley.

Behind an explosive offensive performance, the Dragons defeated the Tigers 35-25. The Dragons offense generated 497 yards of total offense. The Dragons threw for 298 yards and rushed for 209. Senior quarterback Dov Stickler threw for four touchdowns. Senior receiver Simon Sylvain had 144 yards receiving and two touchdowns while senior receiver Dylan Jaeger had 96 yards and a touchdown. Senior receiver Garrett Creech also made a spectacular 15-yard touchdown catch. Senior running back Ryan Sirwaitis rushed for 135 yards including a 55-yard touchdown.

In the first half, the Dragons took control. The Dragons scored the opening touchdown on a 34-yard pass from Stickler to Sylvain, and the defense held Dripping Springs to two field goals by senior kicker Jack Miller. Sylvain and Jaeger then caught touchdown passes of 67 and 58 yards respectively to put Round Rock up 21-6. Shortly before halftime, the Dripping Springs got a lifeline. The Tigers put together a methodical 75-yard drive that concluded with a seven-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Chase Ames to senior receiver Judah Satterfield. 

Round Rock augmented its lead in the third quarter following Sirwaitis's 55-yard touchdown run. On the ensuing drive, Satterfield caught a pass and dashed 64-yards up the field for a touchdown; but the two-point conversion failed. The Dragons then responded with Stickler's 15-yard touchdown pass to Creech. Ames connected with junior receiver Solomon Rand for a 22-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter, but the Tigers once again failed the two-point conversion.

Up next for Round Rock is a showdown with former district foe Austin Vandegrift (2-1) next Friday at Monroe Stadium.

Dripping Springs, meanwhile, returns home to face Killeen Harker Heights (2-1) in their final non-district matchup.
